Hey Team,

Just bought a 16 foot Crestliner tin boat. I had a boat for two years about 5 years ago but it was an inboard motor. Still new! Still trying to learn! Your expertise is appreciated.

1. I have an old metal gas tank that was stored outdoors. I want to clean the inside of it so it has no debris or old fuel build up before hooking it up to my motor. What's the best way to do so?

2. I know the big tubing is for filing up with gas. What's the close and far little ones? Which one is the vent and which one goes to the motor?

Thanks in advance!

Looking at the photos I would say that the tank needs professional cleaning. A truck garage would be able to get it done .
It would be probably cheaper to purchase a new plastic tank with tha appropriate quick release pipe fittings.
Make sure

The motor one goes to the bottom of the tank the vent comes from the top. With liquid in, blow air in and listen for bubbles.

Agree with others. Buy a new plastic tank. Change the fuel filter and replace the hose from the tank to the filter. Otherwise you may forever be plagued with corrosion particles, even if you get the tank cleaned on the inside it will immediately start rusting again.

Just go through classifieds and get yourself a pre-plumbed Outboard tank with pipe etc.

If you need large capacity - then have two outboard tanks - that's my safety 'net'. I have both full. If I run out of fuel in one ... I know that if I set engine at economic speed / consumption - I will get home on second tank. Having split like that - easy to lift out and fill at garage.

Thanks for the input guys.

I just bought it because it was 20 bucks. Took a flyer on it.

Could I convert this into a boat tank? Just add a hole and run a fuel line or something? It's only ever held gas.

Congratulations on new boat. Nigel's advice re 2 tanks is best. I presume by calling it a "tin" boat you mean aluminium. Very popular in Oz I think compared to UK. Things to watch for are always store with stern down so hull drains of rain etc. Wash out with fresh water after use. Any water sitting in bilge for a long time can cause corrosion. Ali hulls can be subject to fatigue cracking if they are driven hard in rough water bashing in to waves. Look out for small leaks near keel and frames. ol'will

Thanks!

Yah, he said it has no leaks. We'll see if I find some Haha. We only have fresh wster where I'm from in Canada. So that makes it easier on the boat/motor.

I'm hoping I can just add a fuel line tk the motor to the gas tank I have there in the pic. It's the perfect size. Has a vent on the cap. Just need a fuel line...
