I’m pleased to say that I have a new boat on the way. I’ve just sold my Targa 40, she will be missed as it’s such a lovely boat. It’s off for a new life in Holland.

My new boat is a 2015 Fairline Targa 48. All white. I’ve bought her in the UK, but will be shipping to the South of France early next year. I wanted a UK boat as will bring it back in a few years time., plus a solid history and you know what you’re getting 100%.

I’ll be doing a bit of work on her in the UK, including some upgrades and then it’s ready to go. Just now need to learn using an IPS..

How old is the ….did I read “ IPS “ .
D6 out drives to IPS , it’s a different boating career .Good luck !
Well there’s a VP franchise Sud marine diesel as close as you can get to Antibes marina, the only up side i can think of .
They know how to charge as well ,Speaking from experience.

Anyhow new boat threads breath oxygen into this forum ……..much needed .Good oxygen.

Congratulations Jonathan. Looking forward to the pics and learning a bit more about her. Are you going to keep her at Antibes?

Haha, I thought IPS may get a few comments. I have solid history on this boat, hence a UK purchase. I have even had my resident UK Volvo penta legend cast his eye.

As long as the IPS behaves, the servicing is kinder than my current DPH drives….

Paul - yes keeping her in Antibes. Going to be there a few years more, fantastic place.

I use Sud when I must get a part locally. But would not use for servicing. I have a superb engineer I fly out annually. Worth the cost.

I did not put you on ignore. I have never put anyone on ignore.
Jesus !
By asking in a way how ever you worded it “ what are the regular servicing costs like on IPS drives?”
I meant some delicate petals on hear might , stress might take that as criticism, implied or real .Then in this case the OP put you on ignore . That’s what’s happened to me with pointed questions by some on here .

Ie JC wads put YOU on ignore .
How ever the OP seems receptacle to gen forum differences in views and has given a robust answer to his new move from D6 + DPH outdrives to IPS ……and we all look Fwds to listening to his experiences with it and as always it’s a given on the forum we all wish him well .

Look Fwds to some pics .

BTW , as you I have never put anyone on ignore either .Thats two of us :).

I am aware of the "internet" reputation of high servicing costs for IPS drives and many horror stories.
I would like some real information from people who actually know something about it and hear some pros and cons.

No criticism meant or implied.

IPS is easy for you as you are used to stern drives.

Forget the joystick. Get used to the new boat like it’s a stern drive. All about the wheel and choose the “helping” engine when manoeuvring.

Then when you are used to that click on the joystick for a bit of help like you would blip a bow thruster.

Touch the throttles again and they take priority.

IPS is great if you already know how to handle a boat and you use in on top of your skills. If it’s all you know, the wind and tide can bite you - but you’ll be fine as you have the “feel” of the boat.

My good pal has an IPS boat and I’ve used it quite a bit. I really like the sporty feel of it despite it being a boat as big as mine.

Would it be fair to say that post 2012 or so, that
  1. IPS drives are 100% reliable provided that maintenance has been done by the book?
  2. The yearly maintenance does not add much to the cost of normal engine maintenance, but it is not readily DIY?
  3. There is a major maintenance every 5 years which adds about 1K euros per engine to a normal shaft drive yearly maintenance bill (changing all the seals)?
I would be grateful for any insights.

First off, I have never helmed an IPS boat, but a couple of weeks ago I was chatting to a pro skipper who had been out training a new owner of an Absolute 52 on our quay. He said that the main problem with IPS was that builders don't fit bow thrusters to IPS boats, and with med mooring in a cross-wind, he said a bow thruster would be really useful. Seemed to make sense, especially after watching them struggle a few times.

Understood. I have a bow thruster on mine thankfully.
