New Boat

You took the plunge!! Well done Dan. No more excuses for you now not to attend more of the outings. A Roy says, I got bad ju-ju. Bring fenders and lots of rope :D

It's being launched at Conwy and the old one is going back on their truck. It will be going in my berth at Caernarfon. It's only 40cm longer than the current one, and with the engine raised on my current one, the new one is probably shorter.
Glad you approve, it should be a lot easier to handle too.

Never lost a boat yet!! This weekend's debacle was a minor. Three vessels crew so seasick the seas were chummed for miles, 1 yacht grounded trying to return on the ebb due to seasick fuzzy get-home-itus head, one yacht lost to refuge and one mobo suffering engine failure, anchor drag and then to top it off fouling the props and bending the legs 45 degrees toe in. My BBQ steaks were delicious though and the wine particularly good. The weekend before was also minor. Another prop fouling and tow in but the grub at Menai was worthy of note. I'm just going to paint Amanzi orange and then peeps will stop seeing me as Bad Ju-Ju and start seeing me for what I am. Your handy tow in service and your bridge over troubled water. :encouragement:

Great boat, welcome to the very small group of VM285 owners in the UK ( about 3, or maybe 4, by my reckoning ), I'm sure you'll enjoy her. Ours is kept here in Poole, and this will be our 3rd season with her, we've found her a great boat that handles well & can take a fair bit of the rough stuff in comfort, and has given us very few problems. I'm sure you'll really enjoy her.

Salty, that is great to hear. I guessed at there being only three in the country so wasn't far off.

There's not many more in the world.
Seen to remember the reviews were very favourable but it very tough for new/unusual brands to gain traction.
I always quite liked their 34 aft cabin but you count the number of those on one hand too.

Enjoy the boat - v drives make a lot of sense

Now that you are part of an exclusive club will you still have time for us yobs Dan? :p However, more importantly, does the new boat come with a substantial funbox and room for a half dozen plus guests to give her a proper boat warming? And when will that be?

All being well, it should be launched on the 31st of May. Works out well because half term is then, so should be out to play for the week. Obviously the weather will be crap but the fun box will be full

You may be right, I know of 3 for sure but, going by from old ads on the web, there maybe 4th somewhere, either that or the spec & year in an ad was wrong, which is entirely possible.

That has got to be the most stable and sea kindly boat in its class I have been on. Very impressed with today's shakedown Dan. An awesome ride.:encouragement:

Great ride out on your new boat Dan, any faster and I'd have needed a G suit! Hope you have as much fun with Serene as you did with Olympic Blue.:encouragement:

Wow, twin shaftdrives on a 30ft boat + a flybridge helm. Thats quite unusual these days and an attractive combination IMHO. Very nice boat. Look forward to some reports on how she goes especially in lumpy seas

What I find interesting/odd is we are all saying 'wow, shafts, excellent, more boats should be built like this' but then Viking managed to sell just 4 in the UK despite a very good MBM report in horrid conditions and a favourable price when compared to Botnia (very similar boat - in fact you may say Viking copied). The one obvious difference is the Botnia is on drives.

So we all sit here and say out drives are awful/work of the devil/no one wants them etc but when a builder shows there is an algebra five they struggle to sell more than a boat a year in the uk.

Is the reason just the market won't buy an unknown brand???

The ride is truly impressive. A big commercial cat came roaring past to port leaving a huge wake. The Viking rolled imperceptibly while we were all shouting brace. Lateral / beam on stability is incredible. Moving forward in a short period 4 second 0.7 -0.8 m swell saw no real pitching and absolutely no slam at 23 knts, yet the boat when man handling around the marina is as light as a feather and very agile on the twins. Less so on rudders, but close quarter handling is a dream. Incredibly impressed, and more than a little jealous of the boats handling characteristics. An absolute ideal choice in the Irish sea for her class size. A remarkable boat, I'm gushing and it's not even mine!

If I was to offer an opinion I'd say the boat doesn't really compromise for the average leisure boater. In this instance form really does follow function. This is a serious sea boat and where as it has all the components of the more traditional leisure orientated boat, salon, cabin etc and they are good in their own right, there is distinct separation. This is a boat that could easily turn itself to commercial use imo, great for a family but spartan on entertainment / socialising space. However for Dan's purposes I couldn't think of a more ideal boat. It really is that good.
