New Boat thread, probably not!

Well, today we put down the deposit for our next boat - time to say goodbye to Breaking Bad and hello to a Lagoon 450 fly - we will have the boat in October.

It's been a fantastic three years with the boat but after spending most of last year at 8 kts following our dear but slow friends in Ocean Spirit, the sale of our business and subsequent retirement; we've decided that a more gentle pace is right for us.

This coupled with the Ann's fixed assertion that the Zombie Apocalypse is just around the corner, blue sky, and self sufficient - ish boating is a very attractive proposition.

The forum has been a tremendous provider of valuable information and I have learnt an awful lot from the wisdom of others; we've also made some fantastic, real, flesh and blood friends within these posts and threads.

Please do not judge me for the move to the Lagoon, I'm considering it a motor boat with occasional wind assisted propulsion - expecting massive engine ours.

I think many of us would consider your option sensible as you retire, for most of us it means more time to spend on the boat but possibly only the same fuel budget of pre-retirement with no need to rush anywhere. I hope your new boat is all you wish for and you keep sailing into a beautiful sunset.

Thanks Bart; will sail her from Vendee to Spain next spring and then down to the Algarve for the rest of 2018.

Would love to have the health and experience to cross with the ARC in 2019...we shall see....

Well done, we seriously considered swapping to a largish cat a few years back for many of the same reasons as you mention. I'm sure you've made a good choice. Please don't desert us, keep us up to date with developments.

You could surely do the ARC in 2018, then carry on thru Panama, do the pacific, NZ, Cairns, Indian ocean, Seth Africa, Ascension, Brazil, Carib, Bermuda, then back to the Med. Stay on here please because we would love to follow your adventure (though if Gludy spots this he will entice you to his MH4Us forum )

You're right, the prospect of a fixed income was a driver in the decision; when I looked at our budget for 2017 running costs for the Prestige I was surprised that we were over £25k, that's home berth, cruising dock fees, fuel, service and contingency. We need to get that down a little so I'm hoping the Lagoon will allow us to spend far more time at anchor have have far lower running costs - time will tell...

Very good!, yes it's a FB rather than the 'sport' top version; which seems to be a standard cat, stb side helm set up for a bit less money...

Now JFM with that itinerary suggestion for season 1, are you trying to get me killed!

If we make it stateside I'd spend a year or two running between Tampa and Chesapeake; might even look at unstepping the mast for a trip up the Big Muddy...oh how I am going to miss work!

Really interesting choice. While retirement is some way off, I like the idea of the cat. Fantastic space, and I could see us spending many weeks on board, drifting around the Med, then waters beyond.

There was one anchored off Cascais beach last summer, it's looked fantastic. Hulls #1 was taken across the Atlantic iirc...
Too big and far too expensive for us though. It will be interesting to see if Lagoon continue the MY line and fill the gap between MY40 and MY630...I'm certain that there is a market.

We are surround by lagoons in Portimao, we're certainly not going to feel elite in our new boat but as you say, bang per buck as far as volume goes; they're hard to beat.

Regardless, I imagine that Ann will have the boat full of crap before too long and we'll be looking at trimarans next!

Yup. Its impressive that Lagoon felt confident enough to take the first boat off the line across the pond and yes the model line up is crying out for a 50 footer

I've never been a cat lover in principle, but I have to agree with that.
By chance, have you ever seen in flesh one of their previous powercats, the 43 or 44? Any thoughts?

And if you want to splash the cash, there is also the new Fountaine Pajot MY44, which seems worth a look for anyone interested in power cats. However, as it is only shown on their website in cgi, buyers might have to wait a while for one.
One thing about cats pointed out to me a few years back by someone who had had one, was that although they are stable and fuel efficient in most conditions, he found his became anything but when higher waves were slamming the underside of the tunnel.
