I just saw on MBY facebook page pics of the Delta Yacht aka Delta 80. Is there a test on this in the new issue Jack? It's been on my shortlist for next boat for a while, and I see they have now launched #1 (six months late, incidentally, but no worries on that score as these projects are complex) http://www.deltapowerboats.se/delta-presents-26m-carbon-yacht/

Does anyone know anything about this builder? Has anyone been on/owned any of their boats? Any thoughts as to quality and anything else? Any general gossip on this builder? It's carbon fibre and lightweight. Does 37knts with 2700hp so it's incredibly fuel efficient, and as a small builder I expect they'll customise it (which it needs imho and just going from the pictures). I quite fancy one of these as a project and they probably fancy having one in the Med...

To me it looks fantastic but am I out on a limb? Do you think it's beautiful or ugly? I'd extend the flybridge overhang right back to the transom, if they'd agree to mod the mould (can't see why that wouldn't be an easy mod)

Think there will be quite a few "out on the limb" very good looking "rufty tufty" yacht, would look great in the med.

fore and aft stability looks pretty impressive (no hobby-horsing in that wave length) but is the promised frugality going to be compromised by the usual jfm mods of stabs, extra tankage, and cubic metres of cushions ? Perhaps the design is a bit 'slabby' as a consequence of the hull form (no pics of her side on), but a bit of subtle painting would make her more like a destroyer than a small containership. And will there be room for a gas turbine genny ?

I'm sure they would benefit from having you as a innovative and precise customer.

(I'd much rather you built a sailing boat for change, though :) )

But would think a very brave buy…
This one would be a keeper; less concern about re-sale, though I think if done really right it would have fantastic residual

9 litres/mile at 20 knots, as they claim, is pretty extraordinary in an 80+ footer. You're in full d boat territory, but doing 20 knots. 7000 litres would give great range. Add 10 Kw of solar panel on the flat top, and maybe a hard top, and you'd suddenly be eco-friendly

It needs quite a lot of modding though, and I have no idea if they will play ball on that. Factory is in Estonia I believe so it's easy to fly to every few weeks. I'd have to get over an aversion to IPS, but maybe that's a compromise worth making. As they are such tiny motors (D13 900s, I think) the e/room would be relatively small and the accommodation deck in 25.5m loa and 6.2m beam must be enormous

It could also be a wrap silver or gold job, with those lines. Or purple metallic.

I've no idea about price. Might contact them next week

The only drag I'd add would be stabs, which add 300kg and cost in the order of 1/2 litre per mile - drag is in the order of 75hp at 20 knots, though with the curved fins it gets more interesting as they function as hydrofoils if you want, inducing lift. All my other mods are not significantly weight additive. Extra tankage is only extra weight for the first couple of hundred miles on a long trip, and for weekend local cruising it's nothing cos you keep the tanks half full to save fuel. Gas turbine genset would save weight

I see what you mean about slabby, but in a funny kind of way I like the utilitarian looks including the slabbiness. There is quite a fine line between avant garde and ugly I suppose

I think you could make a fabulous inside helm in this boat with the forward raked, almost mullionless, glass set up they've built. The design in this hull#1 isn't great imho, and needs a complete rethink, going by the pics

Yepp, Mission Control++ , with HUD on rising glass screens for when under way ? None of this multiple screens business cluttering up the flat areas when you are relaxing at a stabilised (non-swimming) anchorage .

Looks fab but do you really want 3 x IPS in a long distance cruising boat? Also mag tests have suggested that manufacturers' claims about IPS economy are often overstated. Stiil, I love the rufty tufty pilot boat styling and if anyone has the knowledge and experience to work with a manufacturer to produce something special, you have. I guess as they're moving up from a range of small boats, they'll also need to up their game a lot to give an 80footer the finish it deserves

Umm, not so sure about the styling, but it might be a "grower". Probably best to see it in the flesh so to speak, before a hard and fast view. IPS drives are also a "not sure" for me at this stage, but if you plan to keep for less than 3 years, then not really an issue for you surely JFM?

The economy is, I think, form actual seatrials. And if 2700 hp does 37knots, then roughly 1400 does 20knts, and 10 litres/hour becomes believable

The styling is a personal thing but I love it, and the interior would be fantastic

IPS is not my first choice, but if the deck lifts easily, and bearing in mind they're tiny compared with big MAN/CAT/MTU stuff, you can in the final analysis just change the whole thing goddam. They're probably only £70grand a pop for a motor and 20 grand for a drive. Not the sort of bill you want, but not "write off the boat" time if they don't last like Cats (which are 2 million litres fuel per big overhaul, which is 100 years of my boating)

The flybridge should have been stretched both forward and back, like this rough mock up (you'd re-do all the flybr furniture of course; I haven't done that in these pics.:

Here are interiors to hull #1. Needs some changes, and dash set up especially needs a re-think, but pretty good starting point

Dash can be re-designed easily... adopt some of the integrated bridge tech, and you could have helm & navigators seats on sliders (not always in straight line).... or even better, make console move to demand customer....

Looks very good (outside that is!)
inside looks a bit too minimal without a great knowledge on what to do all this space. Needs a serious rethink, but I'm sure J you'll manage/enjoy this :D

I'd say go ahead!

V.

PS. surely the 10lt/h is a typo, right?

I think it's fab especially in CdA where -grace,pace stye, and speed are king -and perhaps people watching .its a real head turner .Ok it's got a long cruise Eco 20 knot caperbility as well as 32 knt to the Lerins there and back ,As well as alleged 37 kts max .
I like the high bulwarks ,forward seating area and cockpit sky windows .
I would keep the fly original size ,add a T top .( binini s are so yesterday ) may be mod the bow area to store toys like the topper or mod a rack inside the tender garage cieling ?.
IPs thing -save fuel certainly tootling and another gadget to master the joystick .
It's v diff from your trad sq 78 design .Quite a departure TBH but a combo of latest tech which may well date say in 5 y time.
How ever if it trumps on trendy Eco + vast internal vol +style then it should be ok .

Just seen dash pic,
yeh work in progress.
get rid of the black boxes. Blocking the view .
replace with glass screens if poss HUD .
armrest of the masters chair - as well as the joystick place a micro helm ,throttle and autopilot control perhaps all touch on a pad like a mini I pad .
so you can basically control the boat from your seat .Think Capt Kirk -Enterprise:rolleyes:
place some screens ( read dials) in that Aircon duct above the forward windows .

Doubt it will date as this IMHO is the way forward, now as much as I adore what is commonly called a jelly mould, this looks awesome, 10/10 and expect to see many more following this style!......refreshing even...:)

Nice big space using the beamy hull well but some of the panels look thin. Seems they've gone for light weight in the interior as well as in the hull?
