You could transfer 50% of your "savings" to me as I am one of the "losers" with a hull length one foot less than the model name!

Justice must be seen to be done.

Excellent.

Just provide me with all your bank details including password and you will be seen to be done :)

Yep. Same philosophy with Mars Bars. Apparently they've got smaller, but the price has remained the same. Of course, an astute marketeer would have positioned it as the Mars Bar Lite, the slimmer's version.

Ah but Mars have been doing this for years. My fathers friend used to own a shop, two lines of mars bars used to be snug in their place on the rack and over a few month more and more room would develop at the ends until......

New BIGGER sized Mars bars came out.....and they were once again snug in their two rows......and the whole process started over again:rolleyes:

Have you measured LOA ?
Ours has got a Bavaria 36 plaque in the cockpit - the 37 on the side is mere decals!

No, I have taken the dimension from the brochure, which is repeated on the original Greek registration, so is now also on the Bill of Sale and SSR - so must be true!!!

Normally the Yard foreman in the club measures the boat as they usually charge including overhangs, but beam was more of a concern when finding me a berth, so I don't think he bothered.

The CE plate has long since disappeared - worn away by the sunbathers leaning against the cockpit bulkhead.

Sometimes the builders are not consistent within their own range: the Dufour 365 is less than a foot longer than the Dufour 34 (the names suggest a difference of 2'6").

My NAB35 is Part 1 registered at 9.26m---presumably between uprights.

This is what the marinas in Iberia charge me for, even though the insurance certificate, which ,unlike in Britain ,they examine, says 10.50m. I don't fill the forms in ,so I don't lie!

Saves a fortune!

The David Sadler designed Frigate 27 was a touch under 26' long; I suspect the name was a salesmans' idea.

Re. other designs, nowadays I'd think the old ideas of retractable or raising bowsprits are suddenly fashionable again, though for the same recessionary reasons a wise marina manager might turn a blind eye !

It used to be that our mooring fee was based on beam as well as length. My neighbour in our busy harbour was asked by the harbour authorities why he had declared his boat as 1 foot narrower that the previous year. He wrote back to explain that it was because the harbour management had put so many boats in to the harbour that his boat had been squeezed to the extent that 1' had been lost on the beam. He never received any further correspondence on the matter.

I just thought it was my mouth that was getting bigger.

In France they appear to have a data base of Yachts and their sizes in some of the Marinas. The ask you the make and model and sizes but then check on the computer.

I don't know about bragging-rights (or rites) but I must have been the ultimate sucker as I bought three undersized boats in a row: a Mystere 26 = 25 1/2ft, a Sadler 29 = 28 1/2ft and an HR 34 circa 33 1/2. I did wonder why my friend's Bav 34 seemed so much bigger.

So what length is an international 12 metre as used in Americas cup ?

Nothing to do with length per se, although it does come into it. Like many rating measures it is a calculation based on a formual using various key measurements and where the answer is 12 metres.
