New boat for West Mersea lifeboat station?

Had an RNLI lorry parked up overnight at our site, a long way from the sea!

chatting to the driver whilst making his morning coffee, discovered he's taking an Atlantic 85 trailer to West Mersea so that the slip can be tested to see whether it can cope with the longer boat

The Lifeboatmen at West Mersea did not really want the present boat, as it was a bit big. Furthermore, as it was big it needed a tractor for recovery. The boathouse was not big enough for tractor and boat, so that had to be extended - all for a boat they did not want, and now they are getting a bigger one? Perhaps there is something I don't know

The RNLI coffers overflowing with £s

The Orwell based Volunteer crew seem to manage with a small boat & even manage to raise their own funding too

I have a shop that I used to let the RNLI have rent free for a charity shop. One day the ladies who work in the shop were called to Hadleigh, which is the Regional RNLI headquarters, to listen to a management consultant telling them how to run their shop. The ladies were so appalled at the palatial waste at the RNLI office at Hadleigh, and the waste of the management consultants fees, who knew less about running a shop than they did, that they stopped working for the RNLI and started raising funds for Essex Air Ambulance instead

I thought the news that a local station might be getting a bigger, faster, safer, better equipped and more capable boat was a good thing!

Hadleigh office closed some time ago I think u will find

Well it might be, but they do get up river quite a lot where bigger may not always be best.

the present Atlantic 75 went on station in 2001 they have plenty of time to get use to it. It is due for replacement soon 2014 ? with an Atlantic 85 about 1 metre longer and fitted with radar and VHF DF Draft with outboards down slightly greater

but they only operate at weekends in the summer generally and only in daylight hours
perhaps it is just as well that the RNLI can provide new boats and boathouses when required
of course if they went broke we could rely on the government to take over could'nt we?

The RNLI are highly unlikely to go bankrupt
Volunteer run on a very tight budget
 
The volunteer only just manage to keep operating. I believe it got quite tight a couple of years ago, but they run a really useful service for lesser emergencies.

Primarily it would seem, because they are out on the water actively patrolling over weekends in the summer when demand is likely to be highest, people feel more willing to ask for their assistance in a minor emergency rather than call the coastguard and instigate a lifeboat shout for something that isn't necessarily life threatening, as well as the fact that since they are already on the water the response time is very low.

I would suggest people consider splitting down their regular donations between the RNLI and The Volunteer since the end result of either amounts to pretty much the same thing.

A relatively tiny reduction in RNLI donations could be massive for a small local charity.

I agree totally. I remember when they started and know the reasons for that. If they were not here Walton and Harwich LBs would be out all day in the summer weekends.

It's a pity the volunteers don't seem to have collection boxes, we get quite a lot of donations to the RNLI in our box, if the volunteers did the same I'm sure people would happily share between the two. I'm not keen on doing a DIY box as they always seem a bit like a con
