New boat dissapointment

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

It was caught on cctv luckily and will be going through the van owners insurance. We were hoping to get out on her in February but looks like the gods are against us!

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

If the scratches are superficial and haven't impaired structural integrity what's stopping you going out in Feb? The van's insurance can cover the cost of repair and lift out as neccessary and probably at your convenience. You wouldn't stop driving your car just because someone bumped it in the car park.

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Hubbie seemed to think that because the scratches are deep that it wouldn't be a good idea?

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Just how deep and where are these scratches, below the waterline? An assessor should be able to advise. Any photos?

EDIT. Beaten by Jimmy

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

That is nasty but shouldn't at first glance prevent you from going into the water.

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Agreed, most of us have done far worse against pontoons or harbour walls. :)

Obviously you want it repaired properly, but I wouldn't let it stop you using the boat.

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

So the saga continues...... I thought owning a boat would come with costs but I was kind of hoping to at least get out on it before the thousands mounted up....
Chapter 3..... So the outdrive is fixed thanks to Volvo Paul and she is back on the water:-) now hubbie goes to switch on the water again and water starts flooding the engine bay..... Seems the fittings just behind the transom shower have split and water just pours out. It's in such a fiddly place it's almost impossible to get to. Does anyone know if he removed the shower from the outside of the boat if he could get access this way?? On top of this the bilge pump is no longer attached to the floor and just floats on top of the water, anyone have any ideas on how he can fix it to the floor??

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

i think you can unscrew the shower fitting, remove the box and pull gently out. this should give you access to the fittings.

Bilge pump can be screwed into and engine support rail or stringer.

Sorry to hear more woes, just for your info once it's fixed The reason it leaks could be because of frost damage, very important to drain all taps of water and leave turned on when leaving the boat, this way any water left in the pipe or tap will drain completely and not freeze and break a pipe or tap unit.

Yes we think that's what happened. We couldn't drain all the water etc during the recent cold spell as the batteries were disconnected, engine in bits.....just hoping that's the only damage done.....

Best way that I have found to drain the domestic water is to open the valve below the calorifier, and connect up a dinghy pump to an open tap, and keep pumping. It takes quite a long time.

I think you're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think the OP's insurer will pay for this (mechanical failure). There's also no obligation for the vendor to pay either.

Don't be so sure. My insurance paid out 23 grand when I sunk, because my engine mountings had been broke for years, it took the prop shaft out and that took out the back end. In my defence I'd been asking the mechanic for two years to fix whatever the problem was, but he never found it.

Re the bilge pump, screw it to a plywood base and jam it into a space as low as you can get it. Do not fix permanently as you will need to clean it from time to time.
