New boat dissapointment

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

just put outdrives into the forum search engine and hope your computor can handle the tales of woe and anguish. :):):)

Just for a laugh I tried this:

Searched "outdrive problems" 357 results
Searched "shaft problems" 383 results

Searched "Oldgit outdrives" 370 results ! :)

Think the OP has been very unlucky here, the UJ's have to be abused to cause this sort of failure, either they were corroded due to faulty bellows or were run in beach mode incorrectly.

:D Old Git obviously has the sadim touch when it comes to outdrives.

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Was definitely not in beach mode. Only just come out of Gosport marina and taking her first turn.... The snapped joint did look very corroded...... As for the out drive search it has been my bedtime reading for many a night,... Haha. Time to just focus on getting it fixed ready for a glorious summer:-)

Shame that once again somebody has had to learn the usual hard lesson about the problems that go with outdrives.
.

Usual/ Always ? Not in my 14 years or so ownership experience with them.
No corrosion, no mechanical failures, no leaks into the bilge or into the drives, no visits from the "shaft drive are best" extremists. What am I doing wrong ?

Not using your boat(s) during the 14 or so years!?! ;);)

Same here 3 boats with 290 outdrives. 4-5 years each. New oil, bellows and check every 2 years.
Clutches do need to be replaced around 1000 hours but apart from that no major problems.
Though acording to the engineer the 290 drive is one of the more robust ones.

Why bother pointing out the short comings? we know what we have suffered in the past and learned from our mistakes.

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Interesting reading..... I can assure you our stern drives will be the some of the cleanest, well maintained examples out there:-) it's been nice learning from someone else's mistake.....

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Don't take too much heed of those two old GOGs. They'd have you in a full displacement fishing trawler as the ideal boat and convert you to Pascoeism. They used to walk barefoot to school in the snow you know. 20 miles! :p

foxtrot oscar! psst there is a sale on at you know where, loads of regurgitated vilvoe bits, superchagers and the like, unused (well they never worked from the start) Have fun

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

See. Pure GOG :p Grumpy and irascible old buggas :encouragement: Got to love em :D

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

well done cari with your pos outlook you will enjoy boating to the max ,ps we call our first mates swimbo what do you call yours

Re: A new circle of hell .... The Outdrive

Mentioned somewhere earlier on this thread, if there is a silver lining to this, it is that it's happened in the "off season"!! There will be a day this spring / summer when you'll be belting round the Solent on a warm calm day and the universal joints will be a distant memory

A brokered sale is still a private sale, so likely no re-course here.

So what to do ?

I would employ a reputable engineer to assess what the level of damage is. If you have some engineering capabilities do not fear what might be required. If you are on the Hamble I for one will be pleased to assist, although I am not an expert by any means on outdrives, but I am happy to help you with your spanners to attempt to fix the thing, or suggest when you need to bring in said expert.

PM me if you wish to take up my offer.

There are none so blind etc etc..............:)
Two distinct types of outdrives
Those that have had repairs done ........
.....and those about to need them.
Like death and taxes,if you have these assemblies of aluminium/brass/ steel/ and rubber wilfully corroding away on the back of you boat,at some point they will get you.
Get out while you can .:)
