Well having completed the purchase of our 1997 targa 29 our first boat, on Christmas Eve we have been very excited to bring her "home" to the Hamble. Unfortunately on our maiden trip after a lot of noise and vibration we limped home on one engine:-( . Having had it lifted and an engineer look at it it seems the uv joint has failed and caused a lot of damage.... Has anyone experienced this at all and have any idea what the ball park cost is going to be? Also having had one fail would it make sense to replace the other as a precaution?
Would be grateful for your thoughts.....

I had exactly the same issue, on a delivery trip about 8 years ago.

Mine didn't let go and destroyed the bell housing as well, which added about £1000 to the bill and resulted in taking the engine out.

Total cost to repair which included engine out and back in, new bell housing, UJ, bellows etc was about £3k

Sorry to hear that. Was it a brokerage or stock boat or private sale?

Did you do a survey on the boat before the sale? A quick gearoil check and a look inside the bellow often says enough.

That's really awful news, you have my sympathies. If there ever can be a silver lining on something like this it would be that it happened now and not during the season. Best of luck that this is the only issue and the repairs are not too dear. :(

Yes there is that.... It's just frustrating as we haven't even been out in her yet, if you exclude the move from Gosport. Trying to stay positive as I was the driving force in getting our own boat which isn't turning out to be the experience my husband was hoping for...

I'm very sorry to hear of your difficulties and not trying to make light of the financial cost or the inconvenience.

But...things breaking and needing to be fixed does tend to be part of the experience of owning a boat and so what you mustn't do is let it discourage you.

How I remember the year I had my boat lifted for a minor adjustment and then spent the next couple of months waiting for consequential issues to be fixed, all the time with the boat on dry land and, you're way ahead of me here, that was the sunny bit of the summer that year. :D

So do try to keep positive about it all.

Once it's all sorted and you've had a few days bliss on her he will come around :encouragement:

Yes we did that as well. Surveyor also present for Sea trial. All went well, no issues. Tried to do everything by the book:-(

Not nice and by looks of it could be quite expensive. I would have hated that to have happened to me when I picked up my boat. I did have a major issue with it, but that was because I hit something submerged, was out of the water for months, all over the hot period. Hope it does not become to expensive. and try to see past it. It looks like you done everything right. But with all these things I suppose they are only valid on the day of inspection. Have you spoken to the broker to see if there is anything that they could do to help?

No we haven't. As you say they could only go on the condition presented and wouldn't have been able to foresee this happening.

Not so, who is to say what happened, you could have struck something? like I said have a WORD. The survey did not indicate a problem, you did not note a problem, the broker did not have any reason to suspect a problem? so get them all together on it, see what transpires. The wear and tear? is this your idea or has it been suggested from elsewhere?
