What's this for then?

New type of flare.

You light the bit at the bottom with a match. Not very suitable for damp conditions though it apparently gives a very bright white light. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yer daft boogers, all of you

It's my new Wifi antenna and it's conveying this very message to the esteemed falorum. Could only get average coverage by placing my laptop on the sprayhood, now I can sit below with a good signal and pontificate to my hearts content.

If it works on our impending holiday, MrsTome may be able to extend our time away and it also means that I can do a bit of work from the boat.

Where did you get that one, mines tiny, but I bet that would be much better!!! what plug does it have on it, a little tiny one for a pcaimi (or something) card? I want one!!!

It's a Netgear 9dBi antenna which comes with reverse N connectors, a 2m N to N cable and a lightning supressor. Also supplied is a type N to reverse SMA adaptor then you buy the low loss antenna cable in lengths up to 10m. I went for the 5m (attenuation 3.7dB) and threw away the lightning supressor and 2m cable (another 3dB loss). I fitted the SMA adaptor directly to the antenna and then the fun began!

I couldn't find a Wifi adaptor with a removable antenna so adapted a Linksys USB device, removing the antenna and then soldering on a short length of cable with a SMA connector:

Then bought a SMA-SMA adaptor, but had to solder a pin in one end because all the Netgear stuff uses reverse connectors just to make life difficult. Couldn't source one from RS or Farnell. Anyway, it works a treat even though the USB cable to the nav station is 9m long. Very strong signal (65%) whereas with the PCI card I was getting barely 35% from on top of the sprayhood.

Somebody has nicked half of it. There should be another at about 45 degrees to that one making a well known sign much favoured by Winston Churchill (in reverse)

The sun comes out and everyone goes daft- even Cornishman! I'm off on deck to find a job to do in the sun. Now beginning to wish I hadn't been quite so liberal with Cutters fine Islay malts.

My wifi card, Buffalo has and external antenna socket, but it is tiny, dont know what it's called, I wonder if I could adapt this antenna?? Hmmm will give it some thought!

Seriously, Tom, and avoiding any more naughtiness like tcm's red hot pokers (or was it mother in law's tongue?) why did you mount it on the pulpit rather than high up and, given that you mounted it on the pulpit, why did you choose omni rather than directional? I think some of the directionals give up to 24dB

Mounted on pulpit as there was a spare pole there and I wanted to keep the antenna cable length <5m due to losses. Omni directional much easier and doesn't need any steering (esp in anchorages). Works fine in home berth which is most of the time, but jury out on whether more gain required elsewhere.
