New Anodes

I am just in the process of winter cleaning and replacing anodes and thinking about going with aluminium rather that the current zinc.
We are moored in fresh water (Chichester marina) but apart from the trip down river to the harbour mouth pretty much all of our boating is in salt water, should I change to Ali?
I cant make up my mind, any help or explanations would be appreciated

Aluminium is effective in both salt and fresh water. so in your situation it makes sense to change. Don't be mislead by the use of the word "aluminium" as for anodes it is only the base of the alloy and the potential of the alloy used is virtually identical to zinc so will lso work to protect aluminium components such as drive housings. Volvo now use it exclusively.

Aha, I had wondered about that, I did think how will aluminium protect aluminium parts, now I understand.

I was in Chichester Marina for 10 years. I always thought it was on the salty side of fresh.

Thats fine with aluminium anodes. Possibly not so good with zinc which may develop a passive coating.

Definitely aluminium since the boat presumably spends 90% of its time at its fresh or slightly brackish water home mooring.

I would say the brackish side of salty - bracking at the back of the marina near the overflow but definitely salty - the lock lets a lot of water in during free flow
