New 30ft day cruiser

Thank you - that's really helpful. The Windy looks and feels fantastic. From what I've seen on the website, you get more interior space on the Nimbus (size for size) but as you said a more traditional finishing. Are all the systems, valves etc as nicely laid out and labelled on a Nimbus as on a Windy? On a Windy you just feel that the engineering bit is their priority.

In terms of engineering and build there really is nothing to choose between the windy and the nimbus. Deck gear, stainless, electrics install: both use top quality brands, and have a real attention to detail. In my opinion you will be over the moon with either marque - I think it will come down to which one you just prefer the feel off.

Since you are going to berthon, you'd be mad not to nip round the corner and speak to offshore at the same time. And don't settle for a quick look round. You want to see how the boats work and which works best for you. Sea trial as you intend to use it - so that's with the kids etc as their security was on your original must have list.

Cousteau, have you seen and tried the new Windy canopy system? I ask because the photo of the 29 seems to have the lugs on the side of the windscreen frame the same as my Khamsin, suggesting you still have to pull lots of holes over lots of lugs, which is anything but "ultra easy", particularly when you're on the inside and the canopy needs fitting from the outside, and you've no side decks to walk along. I'd be interested to know how the new system works.
Nick.. . its a 180 second job from open boat to covered ..? I think we just might have done it 300 times more than you ;)

Will give both a call today to pencil something in for next week. Hopefully they'll have a few boats in the water. The Offshore Powerboating website only mentions a few of Nimbus' models but as a dealer I assume they can source any model. Happy to travel to Sweden to have a look at the factory. And yes I know...not all Swedish women are blond!

Hi

Have you thought of any of the Scandi walk-arounds --- Botnia Targa, Minor and NordStar

This http://www.nordstar.co.uk/?page_id=193 is new and is listed at very close to your budget. We have her sister and have found her fast, comfortable and economical. Ours has a slightly different internal fit-out which makes her rather better for extended cruising, but this one would be ideal as a fast day-boat.

cheers

Bill

So they have had that 28 for sale for at least 18 months.

I think the boat mbm tested hung around for a few years slowly dropping in price until they shifted it.

I'm sure they are nice boats but I'd want it significantly cheaper than a well recognised brand in light of the swift downward spiral in terms of value

Nimbus were sold by the original owners to a private equity group who did what they all do which is screw it up by mismanagement and had to place it in administration. Now back in private hands again.

Quality is very good. Speak to offshore powerboats in Lymington, they have been the nimbus importers for over 20 years.

Nimbus also own Paragon and Rhyds brands and also Storbero but I think the latter is not currently in production.

Nimbus and Paragon is owned by Swedish investment groupp R12. Ryds were bought by a group of employees. Storebro is now owned by a private Swedish investor. They are building interiors for Paragon and Nimbus aswell as new Storebro boats. New builds are in very low numbers i think.

Qualitywise i think Windy and Nimbus are on pair with Aquador one step down. Actualy i think the new Windy 26 looks one step cheeper than previous models in terms of finnish, specially in the cabin.
If you can live with a not so sporty look, maybe the Nimbus 30/31 S could work?

Thank you for suggesting. No doubt she's a comfortable and great boat, but I prefer a more open cockpit like on the other boats suggested above. This looks like a fabulous all weather boat though.

Hi All

for what its worth, I would steer towards either a wheel house or hard top design given the UK weather. You would get much more use out of it and have some great winter trips. I'm in a similar position looking to trade up with a similar budget, currently have a Rodman 800 which is fantastic but a little small now we are staying over. I too have children aged 4 and 6. my preferences would be

second hand - Nimbus - anything from 32-38 foot, SC35, Rodman 940, Aquador 28 or 32,
new - NC9, Antares 30,

probably missing out lots of boats, but all these offer similar accommodation and concepts with the SC35 being at one extreme and the rodman at the other.

I will watch this thread with interest!

Is the Nimbus 30/31S comparable to the Windy in terms of budget? She's bigger so may exceed my current budget (but hey, if she's the one to go for it may be better to wait a few months more).

I would spend a couple of days in Lymington visiting Berthon and Offshore Powerboats. I currently own a Windy Khamsin 34 and have previously owned a Windy Ghibli 28 and a Storebro 410 , all fantastically built and benefitting from excellent dealers which make the whole boating experience that bit more enjoyable.
The Ghibli is the perfect day for her size with superb sea keeping

Cheers

It's still a steep (but interesting and fun) learning curve for me, but is the Ghibli now being replaced by the Coho? The Coho is 29ft.

In Sweden the 30S year 2007-08 is for sale from around £1350000 and upwards depending on engine hours, overall condition etc.
