Some of you may have reading my previous post regarding my first attempted crossing over the Deben Bar at Feleixstowe. Thanks to all of you have posted some great advice . Unfortunately, I never made it over due to experiencing a disastrous engine failure shortly before setting out from Woodbridge. Anyway the long and short of it is that my 8hp BMW diesel engine has completely had it. As we are looking to buy a bigger boat at he end of this year we didn’t want to make the investment of a new engine for this season, and have been very lucky to obtain a Honda 10 hp petrol outboard. There is quite an interesting story behind the Honda. I purchased it from the excellent Seamark Nunn store in Felixstowe. Its 30 years old and had only be used 2 or 3 times!. Its actually very strange to see something that looks relatively old in its design but is actually brand new!

Anyway, everything has been going very well with regards to fitting the engine etc. I am only left with one problem to try and resolve. Because of its age, the throttle doesn’t have a locking position and there is obviously no remotes. (The throttle control itself is a `motorbike` style handle grip.) This is going to course me incredible difficulty as the engine is mounted on a bracket off the Stern. Taking the cover off the engine shows that the throttle is controlled by what looks like a standard throttle cable. Is it possible to get another cable and some kind of remote to mount in the cockpit to control the throttle?

Any advice on strategies I could take would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Thanks.. do you know if you can lock the throttle though with an extension handle? That is my main area of concern..

Don't know about this engine obviously but most have some kind of friction device which can be tightened so that the throttle remains where you leave it.

could tie it off at required speed /revs but I would think it dodgy, most of the o/b Ihave used stay at what ever you open them to but inevitably they will creep.

Hi James

Howzabout extending your tiller arm with whatever tubing you find suitable and then using an old bicycle deraileur gear lever and cable (might find one in the canal) as a throttle. Cables can be modified with a soldering iron if that way inclined.

Are you sure there is no throttle locking device? I once owned a Honda BF75 of the same vintage. This was 7.5hp, but was basically a restricted version of the 10hp, and was almost identical. It had a motorbike type twist-grip throttle. At the end of the grip, there was another small knob. This could be tightened to provide friction to the twist grip so that it stayed where it was when you removed your hand.
