Netbook choice.

To complete this and my previous thread.
Today I ordered one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-MINI-1...097&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=1&sd=360510151588&
There are some good reviews all over the internet for both the netbook itself and the N2600 chip. Hopefully it will come somewhere near the 10 hour working time mentioned in the description, although there is a rider about batteries.
If people are interested I will post news of how I get on.help so far.
Many thanks for all your
Allan

I have recently bought an Acer Aspire One 756 for the boat. This has 4gb ram so runs the full Windows 7. Laptop performance from a netbook size computer. £249 from Tesco - including student discount of £20 which seems to be available to anyone.

A good choice overall - the link I give above to turning my Netbook into a plotter uses the same basic machine except I'm using the 210.. I've been very happy with it......

I chose mine based primarily on battery hours as well, and have to say that I've been very impressed.... investigate the power saving options they're good....

I used it this year on a trip to Cowes and it easily lasted two days on one charge, just hibernating when it wasn't being used....

Separately I used it for a solid 6 hours this summer on a day sail, but that was before I discovered the power saving options (dimming the screen brightness etc.) per the link, that was using it purely as a plotter running OpenCPN with an external GPS

Slight thread drift but is anyone else using opencpn with both ais & gps coming in via serial/usb converters? Mine seems OK with just gps coming in but crashes with both in windows.

Seems fine with linux (ubuntu).

Might be worth sticking linux on there as well for a bit extra stability.

Yes Open CPN with both AIS (Belfield) & a Maplins £20 GPS, both usb antenna stuck inside the cabin window. all works just fine.
running W7 & XP available on 2 lappies

I use Advansea AIS and Bluenext GPS both on USB. Maybe your problem is the serial/USB interface? I had trouble with one years ago and fixed it, I think, by reinstalling the driver.

Yeah, might be one of the interfaces. But getting used to Ubuntu V quickly so will prob stick with that.

I'm using that set up. Both USB on W7 starter and works fine

I have a Lenovo X230, which is overkill for running openCPN, but the inbuilt WWAN card is great as it has GPS and 3G connectivity for downloading GRIB files when coastal sailing. It also has a 256GB SSD which means less power usage and no danger of HDD failure if the thing is dropped.

Expensive, but you can pick them up on ebay for £400+

I use Samsung NC110 netbook - use to have problems with opencpn / usb gps when the netbook went to sleep. on wakeup opencpn / gps connection was lost and i would have to restart. All was resolved by using xport.
