Need your advice...

Depends on wind direction.

If both on one tack, Ramsgate is perhaps a bit shorter. Also Ramsgate itself has no depth issues, and is easier to get in at night. Brightlingsea nicer, and many other options in the area - would be my preference. Tides work out better for Brightlingsea when coming back.

The argument for Ramsgate is that, assuming you have a SW wind, it's a bit easier coming back.

The argument for Brightlingsea is that it's not in Kent, and you will be out of sight of land for some of the time, so you get more of a sense of having gone somewhere.

Pye End makes a good point on the tides.

I'm assuming you mean this weekend?

Bit early to tell but looks like NE wind of possibly 20 knots. I would forget going up the East Coast unless you've got a really powerful reliable motor or a boat which goes to windward really well complete with and a strong crew.

Ramsgate is doable in this wind direction particularly if you head down to Copperas and Reculver rather than the Princes's Channel, as you'll get a half decent wind angle. The area under the wind farms is pretty flat so you can tack on depth all the way down to the Margate Sands. When you closer to shore you will get headed as the breeze hits the land but you'll be 3/4 of the way there by then.

If you get stuck in Brightlingsea not easy on the train to get back, from Ramsgate 50 mins and you'll be back in the Med.

Hope it goes well!

Thanks all, no, it would be in June and yes I have charts and plotter back up and as it has been said, a sense of achievement is needed.
So I've got the east coast pilot and crossing the estuary but what I have not got is the sailing community opinions which fills that gap nicely.

In that case pick a day with a HW before midday and get going, just be at the end of the river at HW and you're good for any direction other than up theThames. Enjoy!

Brightlingsea definitely. Much better sense of achievement, lots of alternatives nearby to explore on the same trip, beautiful local scenery, great curry.

but if you don't like curry, the Fish & Chips from Peter's Fish Factory in Ramsgit are far nicer, even than Winkie's...

Yes great chippy.

Some bad news that may come as a shock to Ramsgate lovers......The Belgium Bar has closed, no doubt killed off by the new Wetherspoons. :-(

That is awful news about the Belgian Bar, we have had some fantastic nights in there, particularly when a spectacularly drunk friend spontaneously took over the bar's piano and gave a high quality classical concert for the patron's.

I can't see that happening in Spoons.
