Need Perkins Replacement Part(s) for Volvo Penta MD2020 Engine

Change your headspace! Tell yourself that you can do it, that you are not retarded, that you can follow simple instructions, that if you get stuck you ask, Do you not think you have better things to spend money on than stupid engines? Take it one step at a time.

OK, well now the landscape has changed a little. Two mechanics have told me after examination that it’s not worth fixing the engine. The head’s going to need to be replaced. Valves are going to need to be replaced and they think that one of the the cylinder walls is scored up and unserviceable and will have to be machined in some fashion The short of it is they both think that it’s a lost cause in terms of dollars and that I ought to put in another engine.

That said, another friend of mine who’s got experience rebuilding engines and rebuilding transmissions has offered to help me put the new engine in. Thinking of getting Beta Marine. I would probably have a yard do the actual heavy lifting, removing the old engine and dropping the new engine in. We would do the rest.

Would it be insane for ordinary people to try such an endeavor as this? Should I just bite the bullet and have a yard to the whole thing? I’m totally lost here.

I’d be interested to know how they’ve arrived at this detailed analysis of the state of your current engine? Is the head actually off now?
Regarding the removal and refitting of engines, if you employ a yard , they’ll use ordinary people like you or me. It’s not brain surgery or magic.

Having said that, my late father in law was a brilliant french polisher but totally clueless with a spanner or socket set in his hands. He had absolutely no feel for things mechanical and could round off any nut or strip a thread without any feel for what he’d done. I used to fix his old bangers of cars as he wouldn’t even notice that the steering was sloppy and the various clunking noises might need investigators. He was so bad with mechanical things that I couldn’t trust him to be my assistant just holding things or handing me the right spanner. If you really are in this skill category then get SEVERAL quotes for engine replacement and let someone else do it. If you’ve got a property switched on friend then it might be a DIY job with you as assistant. My apologies if this sounds brutal.
If you’ve got any mechanical sympathy and basic ability, it’s mainly a matter of confidence.

Before anything else have this friend look at the dismantled engine to confirm the death sentence passed on it.

While it still seems strange that a complete new head is needed - valves etc are replacement parts and if the casting and the injection chambers are sound then the head can be rebuilt. However, worn or scored cylinder bors change things as the labour and materials for a rebore, new pistons, bearings etc probably tip over the edge on a 20+ year old engine.

As for replacement, if it is a saildrive then a Volvo D1 20 is the easiest replacement as it fits with minimal modifications. A Beta needs an adaptor (which they supply) to mate to your saildrive and I think also needs mods to the exhaust run. If it is shaft drive then it is easier to use a non Volvo engine, but it is usual to change the gearbox as well to a TMC that comes with Betas rather than mate to the Volvo box.

Currently Volvo in the UK are offering aa "scrappage" scheme with very generous discounts against new for old engines and it may well be worth getting a quote from a Volvo dealer.

Thanks again folks. I’m going down today with a friend of mine who would never scrap anything unless it was a total loss. If he says the thing is dead then I’m pretty sure it’s dead.

As far as the Volvo engine, I see your point and I am going to get a quote from them before doing anything. They are supposedly working on that now.

As always I appreciate the time you’ve spent in reviewing this.

Worst case scenario, but this is the first one Ive seen, my summing up was that it may have been a blocked exhaust elbow which then allowed the exhaust elbow seawater injection to impinge on the last cylinder.
How to remove a marine diesel cylinder head step by step
The article in PBO is great - as far as dismantling goes. But does anyone have access to the Part 2? The one where you get to find out how to put everything back together again?

As Haynes book of lies apocryphally said; mantling is the reverse of dismantling.
I thought you 'mantled' Tilley pressure lights:) Do Haynes cover that?

Got a 2GM20 out of a boat moored to a finger pontoon in about an hour, back at the workshop stripped the head off and pistons out in another hour. Very simple stuff.
