I am considering going up in size from my present 32’ norwegian Marex Frindsship.
Abt. 35’ – 40’ seems to be a range that has much to offer. I will be looking at both cruisers like Princess, Fairline, Sealine etc. as well as trawler types.
As far as I can see from reading a bit on this forum it seems that many of the forum members own boats in these categories and therefore I kindly ask for advice as to what to look for, within the following parametres:

- Flybridge Cruiser/Trawler
- 35 to abt. 40 feet
- Budget: GBP 80.000
- 3 separat sleeping cabins
- Single/twin diesel(s) on shaft(s)
- Cruising speed min: 18-20kn for cruiser, 8-10 kn for trawler
- Reasonably well kept

I guess what would rule out the most candidates is the 3 cabins. However, as a family of 5 + dog I consider this a must.
Looking forward to receive your experienced recommendations on suitable boats which can be obtained on the UKmarket as will probably have to buy in the UK for export to Norway. The availability of such boats is very limited here. So also need you info on where to go on the internet to find such boats (brokers, classified ads)

Regards

Welcome to the forum!

You are right in saying that there are limited No of 3 cabin boats in this size range, but my guess would be that you may have more success amongst the Trawler types. Also, if you go for a slower (smaller engine size), you will find import costs lower, as you would not be subject to the dreaded tax on the engine size. (hestekreft avgiten), which I believe is still very much a sore subject amongst boat owners in my home country).
Will have a look around when conveinient and see what I can spot.
Please also let me know how your search is going as I am planning a couple of North Sea crossings this year. One with a sail (90 ft. approx.) and at least one with a MOBO, both of them would probably end up being return journeys.

Comment well noted. The 'horse power tax' indeed is a sad story. Now at abt GBP 10/hp, so for a twin 306hp is horrible GBP 6120. Then off course there is 24 pct VAT on the contract price. But still it will be worthwile cause all boats in Norway have been trough the same taxation.
The trawler alternative will save some tax due to smaller engine, and probably is more roomier if one could find one with an aftcabin. As for trawler there is the Grand Banks and I have seen the C-kip. Any others commonly found in the UK?
And a 3 cabin cruiser from the well known yards, is there a anyway to reckognise them in an advert?

Somehow find it hard to believe that you will find exactly what you are looking for amongst the 4 well known ones today, unless you are willing to consider something older (and perhaps bigger). A Princess 41 http://www.boats-for-sale.com/boatdetailpopup.asp?btsrefno=1714164 . Not cheap for the age, but great and safe, to move around on deck for family (and dog) as fore, side and aft deck is uncluttered and all on one level, with only three steps up to flybridge. Later (early 80's), I think Powles made a similar 42 (but not level decks), fitted with 2x212 Ford Sabre. Perhaps I should ask you if the £80K planned spend, is with all taxes included ?

If you want more information about the process over here, and / or prefer to converse on this subject in Norwegian, you may of course send me a PM.

Lykke til...

Mvh, Alf
