I am toying with the idea of a UK VAT paid boat in France, but it does mean I have to leave EU waters every 18 months.

Any ideas on the nearest non EU port from Anitbes / Nice? I am thinking its a non starter......

This is probably an unrealistic pipe dream, but nonetheless an interesting one to play around with.

I am also sure I heard somewhere about a possible 2 year extension to the 18 month rule, but again, that may well be nonsense....

Many Thanks

Jonathan

Monaco?

or is that still EU territorial waters? Can you not go offshore 12 miles for 24 hours…..record the GPS log/ track…..job done?

Alas Monaco shares the EU single market and VAT system.

Re going offshore, it is my understanding that you need a stamp in and out of a non EU port. But could be wrong.

Suggest you check with French customs that you are actually allowed to but a boat in France under TA as by implication it is only available to the person who was granted admission. It may well be you have to put it into bond while ownership changes and then you apply for TA in your own name (TA is for personal use with strict limits on use by others)

Yea - but be prepared for a FULL experience in any Tunisian port.
Lots of hassle and bent customs.
However planned properly with an acceptance of the hassle, Tunisia could work.
Ports would probably be Bizerte or Sidi Bou Said - I've done both - both were equally bent.

i have done Tunisia with an agent. I was stationary for 45 mins whist refuelling. I did not step off the boat. Police and customs waiting. Stamps. Off back to Sardinia. I would not attempt it without and agency.

other is Algeria which needs an agent also.

Tunisia is the better option just add it to your summer cruise

Quite correct, boats cannot be sold while under TA scheme within the European Economic Area.

Its also worth the OP knowing that the UK VAT paid status will be lost in the sale takes place outside of the UK

That sounds an option.
As someone who has bee fleeced by the Tunisians, I can see how your plan would work.
As far as the OPs question is concerned, this seems to be the most likely option
BUT WITH AN AGENT

Exactly.

The nicest thing of Tunisia is that you can look at it as a relatively short passage (100Nm or so).
That's in fact the distance from southern Sardinia, where I'm based.
All other stretches of coast in between when coming from south of France, both in Corsica and Sardinia, are among the best cruising grounds you can find anywhere in the Med.
So, they are well worth visiting anyway, regardless of the need to reach Tunisia.

BTW, an added bonus of Tunisia is the cheaper fuel cost.
Though I heard of folks who had troubles with clogged filters, so also for arranging the refill it's worth using a reliable agent.

A few yrs ago I read in Barcha a bilingual mag aimed at the upper end of the Italian boat building industry they accepted plotter traces .
This was a change done by the then IT gov to smooth out purchasing tax free ( IVA ) malarkey.

For this the owner does not need to be onboard the vessel was driven a prerequisite distance off shore , not far I recall and the paperwork ( via agents ) for the “ sale “ was done when the plotter trace was the correct distance .Obviously stuff was recorded , pics etc .
The boat returned to the yard that afternoon.

This was to save the whole Africa or ex Yugoslavia pantomime trip .
The boat was then deemed tax not paid . TA scheme subsequently applied .

So a president has been set by the Italians. What provisos come with that I don’t know ?
They might be a narrow set ruling out second hand old boats i don‘t know .Buts it worth further investigation now U.K. citizens are classed as 3 P .The time line this happened was 2014/15 well before the B word , driven by the booming IT yacht building - export market .

You can Google up an international map ie out of EU waters in the Med to see how accessible getting out is .
20 or 50 miles or what ever = very doable indeed .

So think QR codes , airport boarding passes and indeed recent vac passes + much more = all electronic theses days, very paperless via a device .

If the Italians are still using plotter traces as evidence it’s left the EU at the POS then there might be an opening as the OP is suggesting .
Some body needs to join up the dots !
