Do they sell Boats? Do the PR men think we are as stupid as the perfume, designer label, jean buying public.
Why don't they just sell porn, theres more money in it.
Dont get me wrong, I like the pictures, but then dont look at or remember the boat make

I take it you're referring to page 13? Great picture. Don't care about the boat. Personally I see nothing wrong with a bit of political in-correctness /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I thought the picture was highly appropriate, and more adverts like this should be encouraged.

However, two small problems:
1.) I can't remember which boat it was advertising, but I definitely remember the bikini.
2.) No way would SWMBO agree to any boat where there was a chance of that bikini being aboard.

Actual Naked Ads in MBY

I thought it was fine. Pretty tame compared with French boat mags, by the way. Also MBY has been a lot racier than that before - eg the piece on Cannes/Cote d'Azur couple of years ago with at least 6 topless wimmin lined up on the bathing platform of a boat ancjored of Cap d'Antibes or somewhere. (If I can find it, do you want me to scan/post it? - for research purposes only)

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

that's was not the point I was trying to make.
I always though the idea of advertising was to promote product awareness with a view to a sale.

I think this type of advertising detracts from the product thats all. Fill the whole magazine up with naked birds for all I care, I just think the ad companies miss the mark

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

OK, gottit, we were going off track.

Hmm I dunno, we need a professional advertsing type to comment. In my very unexpert on advertising opinion, I would think that a certain amount of bikini etc actually helps sell something like a boat. Sort of shows the product in an aspirationally natural habitat? If your mates ask about the boat and to see the brochure, it wouldn't be so cool if it was full of shots of crew in oilskins, maybe?

But there's a line you should cross, else it detracts from the product. Imho that line is not defined by the amount of flesh, it's the whole ambience/composition of the ad. You gotta avoid it looking too MaxPower.

The ad you mentioned was ok imho and although the model's attire was ok imho she looked a bit too photoshopped onto the boat. I looked at it 3 days ago and I dont remeber the boat brand.

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

It's working , we are all talking about it. It was actually a Sessa advert for those who haven't dived away to look it up.

Not an advertising specialist but my little knowledge says this is a not a lifestyle advert. Rather it is an attractor/associator with a key message about 'Italian style' ( you're supposed to think Modena 360 I guess? What colour was the bikini ?... brushed Aluminium etc) ... bit crude in its presentation IMHO.

Agreed , compared to French mags all very tame.

"this is a not a lifestyle advert. Rather it is an attractor/associator with a key message" Cripes you are a bit of an advertisng expert methinks!

We are all talking about it but we're not buying sessas. Imho it takes huge effort to creat an upmarket brand in a boat. It's such a small world/thin market, the only way to make everyone think say your boats are top stuff is actually make them top stuff. You cant make mediocre boats and dupe people into thinking they're top stuff just with a bit of advertising.

Bikini was red btw :-)

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

Unfortunately agree with all your comments ! But this one is not about Brand Building or Image ( I hope) ... pictorial version of what Mr O'Leary does/says about Ryanair ( but his on board crew would not behave like).

I think we could all write books about the marine industry's commercial behaviours ... it also extends to their marketing (imho) ...

Glad you remembered bikini colour was read, means you got the message ( or at last the one I read).

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

Would you have remembered the boat brand if was a Ferretti, Pershing or Mangusta advert? I reckon so. Only reason you didn't recall boat name is it was not immediately apparant that it was a brand you identified with. I reckon.

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

From what I've read here previously, a lot of marine brands rely purely on slick advertising/sponsorship/inflated pricing to assure us of good product.
[rant]Take V**vos, which most manufacturers have fitted but you all seem to hate them - americans wouldn't touch them with barge poles
There is this terrible phrase used in marketing; "priced at what the market can afford". Make crap appear good and sell for more[end rant]

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

Yes. i remeber the ads with the babe lying down on the bed. That's ferretti (and/or I'm a tart).

Sessa perhaps needs advertising. I have no idea what that brand means/is. Dont know much about the boat, whether they're good/bad, cheap/expensive, anything. It might be just me, or do others think the same about Sessa?

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

I lean towards the view that if the pics are nice it will get you to look at the ad - but make the pic TOO nice and we just look at the girls and not the product. Also, go too far and (well me anyhow) I think - "hmm must be a crap product as they have to resort to big t*ts in a bikini to sell it!!!

It is not how much flesh, but how shown that matters here I think.

Different in "the flesh" tho - near naked women at shows work - no doubt about that.

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

Yep, would be of great assistance to me in my PhD thesis on 'Bikinis and Boating'!!

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

Um, I'll try to find it. Not sure wil help your thesis, as each lady in the pic was only wearing 1/5th of a bikini (measured by surface area of cloth). Think dental floss....

Re: Actual Naked Ads in MBY

Maybe the problem with the Sessa ad was that the woman occupied most of the image and the boat next to nothing?

Oh I don't know, I'm inclined to think that there might be a boat manufacturer out there that carefully aligns their boats in terms of basic design, price, advertising (coverage and type) and ever favourable magazine boat reviews with better quality "top stuff" marques successfully enough that people associate that brand in the same breath as the others.

Here's another of Sessa's honeys.
