HI There

One of my customers recommended SKYPE (www.skype.com) It alows you to phone through the computer to any landline or mobile at a very cheap rate ie 8 min call to New Zealand 13.6 Cent(Euro) and if the other person is on Skype as well your call computer to computer no charge I spent 20 mins chatting to my sister in the states no charge and it was a clear as a bell. By the way I have no connection with them. the software is free to download and use.

You need to have broadband and a head set with a mic.

Cheers

Colin

PS I had a great trip to the show got the tube & DLR to the front door.

Also have SKPE, though havn't really used it much .. largely because I don't generallty make overseas calls.

Since you mention headset/mike, assume you are just plugging into the usual sound-card connections? I have seen mentioned several times that you really need a dedicated USB phone for good quality .... but that may simply be hype to sell them!

I used a cheapo mic: that came with a sound card, worked OK quality-wise, but one need to be close to make the noise cancelling feature work well. Dedicated head sets (cheap ones from Farnell) make the system work better.

I regularly use Yahoo Messenger for international calls; free download as well. The quality of the sound is acceptable though I have (minor) problems with the jacks.

A friend of mine who is reponsible for internal telecom in a telecom company now recommends skype for better sound quality. Incidentally, his firm has banned phones for intra-group communications.

I am using a cheap head set 1 ear phone with a mic attached like you see some receptionists using. It plugs into the sound card but I have ordered a USB set. so I can leave my speakers pluged in

There are advantages that Skype has over MSN - one being the ability to use PC to direct phone/mobile calls at incredibly cheap rates. Use it a lot over here in Spain and have spoken to other forumites. Add your Skype name to your bio and maybe we can get the biggest conference call (another advantage) ever held by the sailing/mobo fraternity!
