Does anybody know why I can no longer see the website background colours on any website I visit? I have recently brought my PC's Windows 98 system as far up to date as I can via the Microsoft website and also loaded a Mc Affee virus scan. Now my PC will only display the narrative and pictures of any website on a stark white screen. Is it the virus scan filtering the background out or is this normal on fully updated Windows 98?

I have run scandisk and defragmented the PC but to no avail.

Anybody have any ideas?

No, it's very def not normal behaviour.

The fact that it is occuring on all websites is the strange bit. If it was just one or two it might be easier to diagnose, as websites display backgrounds in different ways. Do you get coloured backgrounds when you do things like change wallpaper on your desktop.
As a first line guess, I'd say you might want to reinstall your video drivers, but that's purely a guess at the moment.

i have had similiar problems, out of interest go to one of your webpages, go to "tools"then "encoding" and the pick an alternative to what it is currently on.this might help perhaps temporarily,if it continues you might need to go to something like"errorguard".

Er . . . Brendan, I know you are the world's leading expert and all that, but I am using IE6 and the 'main tool/internet options page' you refer to has the tab 'General' at the top - this is the default option it opens with, describing it as the 'main page' is rather misleading. If you take the trouble to click through to the page your link goes to you will see that it says very precisely to go to the General option and the illustration shows this.

Looked 3 times, still no 'general' option on version of IE I'm using?

Don't want to start a war here, but you have to give advice based on what people actually see, and that is what I try to do. For me, if you click on Tools. Then Internet options, Accessibility is down in bottom right corner, and there is no 'General' tab or option, sorry, but that's the way it is

A picture is worth a thousand words . . .

The 'General' tab is the default window for the Internet Options dialogue box, which is where I think the confusion arises.

Nick. you are a genius! I did as you said and the colours returned.

How in heavens name the box got ticked I don't know, I could not have done it as I did not know it was there.

All's well now. many thanks. and thanks to the other contributers for their time and interest. It is much appreciated.

Regards, Alan.
