About to replace all of our fenders. Just before I purchase new ones is there any chance of the navy (Majoni) plastic discolouring our white gel coat? No problems with this on existing fenders most of which are white, but one or two blue ones have not caused this problem.

Just checking, as although we prefer navy, we could obviously purchase white ones instead.

Thanks for any/all opinions.

I use Compass fenders (Polyform) white with blue ends, never had any blue marks left on gelcoat. Very good fenders at good price from compass. http://www.compassmarine.co.uk/ They do them in solid blue.

GrumpyOldGit: Thanks for the heads-up. I agree that navy look nicer, but if the cost is having blue smears along our hull then perhaps i'll have to have a re-think : (

Stork_III: Thanks also for your info. I may now go down the white with blue ends route, but I'm probably going to stick with size 4 Majonis.

Thanks again to both of you. Happy sailing!

Buy white ones with navy socks. Then you won't damage your topsides through long-term fender use.

I hate fender socks! They hold grit and can cause more damage than plain fenders. My topsides are 22 years old and aren't damaged, even though the boat's spent all its life in marinas.

Do not get socks they pick up small sharp bits of grit
A rather "posh " dutch yacht moored against me for 2 days & when he left I noticed a load of semi circular scratches where his fenders had rubbed & grit in them had scratched our topsides.
It is a bit like the opposite of safe sex- insist they remove the socks or use your own fenders

I was in Eyemouth earlier in the year & this is a fishing port.
I picked up some buoys used for marking nets which are red & circular
They cost me a fiver each for about 200-250 diameter
Seemed like a deal worth having. Best for alongside another yacht or alongside in a lock. The extra diameter helps at the rear where the stern goes in
They do larger ones if you can get them in your locker

Damn it, looks like I'll have to get green fenders for my green hull

Just bought a couple of big cheap new white dutch ones from a boat jumble, will be interesting to see how long they last! I can see them popping in my first outing :(

I have used fender socks for years and have very nice, undamaged topsides. I know of two boats that have very badly damaged topsides due to naked fender damage. A Starlight 35 I saw last year had gel coat damage down to the layup, presumably in not all that many years.

Puh! Starlights, eh? ;)
