I understand that Navtex is linked to DSC. Does this mean that when I upgrade to DSC, I will receive Navtex messages through the set and therefore not need a seperate Navtex receiver?

I wasnt aware of this? DSC applies to VHF RT, Navtex operates on longwave - at the very least the aerials are incompatible.

Both navtex and DSC are parts of GMDSS, but as far as I knew that was the extent of it.

Also, Navtex requires either printers, screens or a computer, which are note requirements of the average VHF.

As far as I am aware the only manufacturer with a dual DSC / Navtex is Silva S15, I put one in earlier this year, however the receiving antenna for this unit is still not ready for sale, Silva tell me that they have had manufacturing problems, due soon I understand.

Although the screen on the Silva is large for a radio, it is smaller than a dedicated Navtex unit, so readability might be compromised, some dedicated units can be bad enough if they ignore line breaks as some do.

I don't think that there is any link between DSC and Navtex, only the fact that they support each other as part of the SOLAS initiative, DSC is broadcast on VHF FM frequency, whilst Navtex is way down between long and medium waves (AM) at 490khz and 518 khz

Hope this helps.

As I understand it DSC and Navtex are both part of GMDSS but are seperate.. This sitemay help explain the GMDSS

Navtex is not linked to DSC other than both services are part of GMDSS. However, as stated by one respondent, the new Silva DSC VHF is supposed to be able to act as a Navtex display with the connection of a suitable separate Navtex reciever.

When you get your aerial can you please post your opinion of this set and its navtex capability, as I have been looking at it as a possible replacement for my stone age VHF.

They are not linked save in the sense that they are both parts of the GDMSS scheme, hence the possible confusion.

When you upgrade to DSC you do not get Navtext as part of the deal, however there are manufacturers who produce dual purpose sets.

Hope this helps.

I respectfully suggest that you attend the appropriate course to obtain your GMDSS operator's licence during which you will learn all about it.
