Hi Folks.

My Navman 3150 wind speed instrument digital readout has stopped working.

The wind direction is working well, but over the last 12 months the wind speed digits gradually faded away.

I would be most grateful for advice on -

1. Is the instrument repairable?
2. Can I obtain the parts to do the job myself?
3. Is there a Navman service agent about?
4. Has anyone had the same problem as mine and solved it?

Your help and advice will be appreciated.

This is a common fault with Navman instruments. I am on my third set courtesy of Navimo, as they all expired inside their two year warranty. I hear navimo are having a few problems at the mo so you might be stuffed.

I think there was a problem with the glass pcb connector.

If that is the case and you have no joy from Navimo, try googling Saab SID display problems, a cottage industry sprang up fixing Saab LCD displays.

Just a thought

Navman 3150

Ray,

I have the same problem with my 3150. Contacted various repair organisations but no joy. Tried to repair it with a pcb connector ar per the detaisl on you tube but no joy. I think technically it is possible but it was beyond me.

Ive bought a replacement Raymarine, which is what I should have done to start with!

Ditto to what others have said. Northstar took over production of the Navman instruments and i believe they addressed the problem of the Navman display. Trouble is a new display (when I looked) was £300 and i couldn't bring myself to tisk throwing good money after bad. I think Avansea manufacture a display which is plug compatible with the Navman transducer.

However my advice would be to junk it, however painful, and buy something with less known faults. In my case I replaced the whole system with a Raymarine ST60+ system that I bought on eBay!

Cheers, Brian.

Nothing to lose (apart from £12.00)

Hi

I have successfully repaired a multi 3100 utilising a zebra connector from a cheap display out of Maplin.

Bit fiddly but £12.00 repair...

Thanks

Thank you Guys, you have confirmed my worst fears that I will eventually have to scrap and replace the instrument. It will be a shame to do that as the wind direction is OK, but I do need the wind speed as well!

I may at the end of the sailing season, make an attempt at repairing the thing myself, if I am successful you will hear from me again!

Good sailing to everyone.

Repair

Once mine is replaced I might have another go at repairing it. I tried with the wind 3100 but the connector is just too long to get a good contact all along the location previously occupied by the ribbon strip.

3150

Has anyone successfully repaired a 3150? I've seen the video of the repair to the 3100, but is it a similar repair process on the 3150?

My repair attempt will have to wait until the winter layup of my craft, in the mean time I'll have to manage with my hand held anemometer!!

Thanks for all interesting replies.

Apologies for another Lazarus job on an old thread but...

Finally checked the instruments on my NTM. Navman 3100 Depth, 3100 Log, 3150 Wind and a 3100 repeater all connected through a navbus with the navman 5600 chartplotter (which works fine).

Power is going to all units (they all beep when any button is pressed :o) but the depth and log screens are completely blank, the analogue wind indicator works but the digital wind speed screen is blank, the repeater screen shows the odd part of random digits (if you know what I mean).

Now, the Navman instrument screen problems is well known and I have seen the youtube vid on replacing the connecting ribbon connection to the LCD screen with an elastomeric strip. Has anyone actually done this successfully themselves? Can I assume the same repair could potentially work on all the instruments? Where does one find suitable elastomeric strip?

If they are all screwed, I will have to replace them which would mean a trip up the mast to replace the head unit unless there would be a way of using the existing one with a new display unit and a bit of wiring jiggery-pokery.

Verdict-repair

Navman used a ribbon cable connector to the screens on all these displays.

The only difference was the multi 3100 had a slightly wider one.

Time and moisture lifts them off the board and hey presto... screen dies (or partially dies).

You can get a screen from Maplin (sufficient zebra in it to repair two of your displays) for around £12.

I've done it and apart from having to wiggle the screen around a bit to find the right place it was relatively easy.

My new connection has now lasted two years so seems much more resilient to the elements.

Give that a go before shelling out for new kit.

Maplin order code

The order code for the screen from Maplins is N27AZ. The elastomeric connectors were a perfect height but you need to cut them roughly to the right length.

Make sure you clean off the residue from the ribbon cable thoroughly and then use a 12v supply to run them in demo mode whilst jiggling the screen about to recover a full display.

As I said... it's not difficult just a bit fiddly and the satisfaction of fixing at a fraction of the cost of new...priceless :)

Thanks Mountnessie, the 2x16 5.5x3mm LCD? Each has 2 strips so can potentially repair 2 instruments?

Sounds well worth a shot before buying a new set. :)

Yep thats the one

Yes thats the one I used... I didn't fancy trying to trim height so searched through all the data sheets until I found the right one.

I used my second strip as the filler between the screen and the case to provide the suggested "pressure fit".

You could source something else and use the screen to repair two instruments.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions... just wish I'd used a camera as I did it now

:D

Could you explain what you did here? I understand the need for a pressure fit, but don't understand where you placed something extra to do this.

You need to place a spacer on the front of the display so that when you replace the case it provides a slight pressure... This compresses the elastomeric connector and keeps out future water ingress. If you place it at the base of the screen you can't see it when you replace the case... When you take one apart you'll see what I mean.

I bought a set of navman for my last boat and never fitted the wind it is in my loft and I was thinking about fixing it to the current boat, but have managed to fix my st50 wind (broken cable as it exited the masthead block) but still wondering about changing to the navman?

Advansea units are only compatible with depth and log NOT wind, unfortunately. I had wondered if if the new navman wind head could be taken apart and the offending connector strip given a silicone sealant 'jacket' to keep it connected and water proof?

Must say I have been sailing without wind for the last few weeks and have not really missed it and added some telltales to the foresails to aid trimming.

Good luck with it.

Isn't that called motoring?
