Navionics

Not sure Navionics are real masters at tides understanding.
At a question as to why an isolated rock in Northern France had a charted height of 73m instead of 29m (which is the correct one), they replied: sorry we noticed indeed that in that area depths have a LAT datum, whereas heights are over MSL, we will correct the charted height with next update.
Now, northern Brittany can have significant tides, but a 44m difference between LAT and MSL has not been recorded yet.

Hi all, I've just bought the Navionics App on my iPhone and I've a question if anyone knows the answer.

The depths shown on there are presumably chart datum depths (i.e. worst case scenario). I've noticed that if I click on the tides icon, I can have a real time depth from that tide (even future), which is really handy. But is there a way to have this 'real time' depth showing by default on the chart? i,e, without having to go into the tide part each time?

Thanks for any help.
Give Gavin a call, he is a Navionics retailer, very knowledgeable helpful guy. Pm me for his number

You need to buy a new chart. If you do this on expiration you get 50% off. The chartplotter charts are way more costly than the App.
Yes they are and you get quite a lot for your money. I use a dedicated laptop which I find better than a plotter.

I think you will find this is possible by adjusting the depth at which colours change. Explore the settings as I have done it in the past.
I've tried every way I can, but can only get shaded areas to correspond to charted depth. What I'd like is to have a simple no go area which takes height of tide into account.

Navionics has gotten quite pricey now. When I first had it in my phone, it cost about £12 for outright purchase, now it's £34 for a year. But paper charts are £15 each my subscription covers the whole UK and some EU so still good value. Some frills are no longer included like satellite overlays.

The way to do this is a bit fiddly and isn't sticky. Zoom out til you find a tidal arrow. Click / touch on it to select. When you do this, the shading and contours change to reflect current HOT.

Well I didn’t know that, thanks (y) I’ll give it a try next time I’m out, hopefully tomorrow?

I am still confused, so I can’t update my card out of my plotter according to scala , so do I have to buy a new card .

If/when you get the card out plug it in to your computer and get the Garmin update app. You should get a 50% discount on stand alone price for the chart of your choice, valid for 12 month’s updates.

I don’t agree with this conclusion. The height right next the tide gauge says 1.9. Tap on the gauge and it shows 2.5 of tide but the chart depth changes to 5.9. I raised this earlier in the thread but nobody explains it.

That is odd. I tried tried this at Hurst in the Solent and it seems to work ok, you scroll through the tidal range and the charted contours change one meter at a time. Where are you seeing this?

Strange. At least from my local checks it manages the sums correctly. I notice it rounds downwards, such that even a 0.99 m tide will leave a sounding of 1.9 m unchanged, but a 1.01 m tide will increment it to read 2.9 m.

On the River

On the Blackwater near Bradwell marina or anywhere else I have looked.
I've just tested this using the Bradwell Waterside gauge. It seems to work OK for me so I am at a loss to explain what's happening for you. Appreciate this is an inexact science but it's not way off - within a meter or so the the sounding tracks the gauge. The reading adjacent to the gauge reads 8.9 with 5.1m of tide at HW, drops to 3.9 with 0.81m of tide at LW.
