Navionics

I have it on iphone and ipad and think its worth every penny, one bug bear is that it does not always display in the direction (perhaps I missing a trick)I am travelling. tried to see if there is a display direction of travel option but there are very view buttons to plat with.

I have the Navionics app for my Samsung Galaxy Tab2 and it's excellent . Used on the west coast of Scotland and across North sea to Holland and Dutch inland waterways.

Not many alternatives. The only similar is imray, which has more features but I find a lot harder to use. Expensive too- you pay for each pack of charts, as well as tides.

Admittedly I have not looked closely at the alternatives yet but I have heard of probably 3 or 4 alternatives to Navionics.. I think Imray was one.. Others are iSailor and MX Mariner, and I am sure there might be a couple more out there..

My recommendation would be Marine Imray Charts (particularly good for passage planning), and Navionics is also good for passage planning. No reason apart from cost for iPad versions, for not having both on your iPad and iPhone. "MaxSea" and "Garmin BlueChart" are also useable for passage planning, but "iNavX" is not because the measuring ruler does not let you zoom while its in use, so stream corrected headings are impossible to drag a waypoint.

You can check out the general 'look' of both these apps and more free at routelist.co.uk.

Is that "forty quid is the highest we think ipad owners will spring for an app whereas we've been getting away with 200 quid for dedicated plotter maps for years"?

It's the same data isn't it?

And this is with apple trousering about £13 of your forty....

I bought a new i pad and navionics app about 2 yrs ago as a backup in case chartplotter failed (after realising going round SW corner of Jersey inside the rocks etc dark/cold/rainy night how completely dependant on it.

This year upgraded my Navionics platinium chips for Uk & Bay of Biscay for my Raymarine E80 & E120 to the XL version. Came completely unstuck as only once I had left UK did I discovered the difficulties of upgrading the Raymarine software to "see" the amount of data on the XL! Needed an impossible to buy 128MB CF chip (upgrade software is free on internet).

For difficult entrances around Brittany relied on I Pad grateful to have it but it has limited battery life - about 2.5hrs.

Need to try to buy CF card of 128MB or remove E80 and take it to Raymarine for upgrade.

Make sure you buy the I pad with ability to find GPS from satellites not radio masts

I have the med and black sea on mine, works perfect.

Same for me... I just sailed from Hyères SOF to Goček Turkey with iPad mini. Works a treat.

I also bought 2 Yoobao 15600ma chargers to keep iPad charged. These units offer you lots of flexibility and will recharge the "pad" 3 times each before needing charging themselves.

Which model is your Yoobao, looked on the site looks a little confusing, are they available in places like Currys and PC wharehouse.
