Anyone have a view on whether or not Navionics Silver charts are good for yacht navigation needs. Or a pointer to a comparison table - I can't seem to find one showing the differences between their various chart levels.

I have Silver on a Raymarine Dragonfly plotter. It came "free" with the plotter. It has reduced detail but nothing critical seems to be missing. It's hard to remember exactly what's not there but it definitely doesn't go into detail about 100m contours for instance.
The transition from white to blue is at a different depth from the Gold in my C70 plotter; one is 5m and the other 10m.
I find it perfectly adequate for my purposes.

PS the Gold is updateable for 12 months after purchase, and for more money for longer. No updates with Silver I think.
