I noticed a debit on my current account which I didn't recognise. It was for £39.99 to Google so I queried it with my account holder and after some info and further investigation it led to Garmin and further investigation it was a subscription to them. I had ticked the auto renewal button. Now I was under the impression that Garmin was required to give the. Account holder reasonable notice before taking payment. Later conversation with my bank I was told that this didn't apply to subscriptions! As I sold my last boat 5 yrs ago I no longer require current charts.
So I would advise others to be more careful about auto renewal I have have paid £200 in unnecessary payments to Garmin and I've discovered irregular payments to McAfee as well.
BEWARE!!!

Quite often if you contact the company and explain, they will refund the payment as a goodwill gesture, they can see you won’t have had any account activity, worth a try

I suppose the advantage of a Monzo account or its rivals is you can set up such subscriptions from the account and just not have funds to meet payment .
That's not the way to terminate an agreement. It's like cancelling a direct debit without informing the other party.

If the contract isn't ended first, tricks like these will get you black marks on your credit score and damage your ability to get credit in the future.

100% correct. As a matter of course I disable automatic renewal on all my subscriptions immediately after I've paid. Service providers will always remind you before the next expiry date, and you can then decide if you want to continue.
Truthfully, I don't understand people not checking their card and bank accounts. I'm sorry if this is harsh or offensive to the OP but I'd be ashamed to admit I'd had recurring charges for 5 years without noticing.
I have personal accounts with 5 different banks and I have credit and/or debit cards from all 5. My wife has a companion card on one of the accounts, and my daughter has companion cards on two of them. Checking them as they come in via email is not a big job, and I have from time to time found mistakes like duplicate charges etc.

My subscriptions for various apps including Navionics on iOS are notified via email by the App Store weeks before renewal, I’m very surprised to hear that Google doesn’t do this? Do you have n old email address registered with the store that you don’t monitor?
They do in fact, Google sends a email notifying you for subscription payments. At least it does for me and allowed me to cancel my Navionics subscription to switch to a free Orca account.

If the OP wasn’t aware of subscription at least making it on a Monzo type card gives a degree of protection. It’s helpful where perhaps the subscriber is elderly and forgetful and cannot/doesn’t read reminders. At that stage in life I suspect a poor credit record isn’t that much of a priority but it gives a solution . Remember these are debit cards not credit cards so they have to set up to have money in advance so no credit is given of course . Obviously it’s easier to cancel the DD if remembered but in the OP for whatever reason didn’t happen if he had put on a debit card he would not have had the issue 😀
