just bought a new plotter that will take either. any preferences? and if so - why?

I've used Cmap for a number of years and been happy with it. Haven't used Navionics, so can't compare from direct experience. One of the yotty comics did a comparison test a few months ago, and Cmap looked more similar in appearance to Admiralty charts than Navionics.

Same here, I bought the plotter because it took cmap.
The presentation is good and I like the wide chart coverage.

For me it was a no brainer to use C-Map as I could get the whole of the Med on a single card at reasonable cost because the plotter I bought had a voucher for a local chart which I could offset against the cost of a large area chart. Local area C-Map cards covering just Turkey required two as the division between them was right in the middle of my regular cruising ground. Navionics had a similar problem but for about the same cost of my all Med chart I would have got considerably less coverage. If you want to buy local charts it is a good idea to compare the area covered because different chart boundaries between makes could make the difference between buying one chart card or two.

I like the appearance of the C-Map charts more than the Navionics ones but that may be because I am used to them as my old plotter has them.

P.S. What plotter did you buy. I love the B&G Zeus Touch plotters which take both makes of chart, but did not have enough space at the helm even for the smallest one.

I've used both and for me, the CMap was nicer and whilst I am constantly amazed at the stuff on the Navionics (which I now have), a recent trip on a friend's boat reminded me that CMap is better looking and, I feel, has nicer attributes for waypoints and the chart presentation.
