Navionics on iPad mini 6

I recently upgraded my iPad mini to a 2021 series 6(the current model) and have been using it with the navionics boating app for navigation. Sadly, the app not infrequently seems to freeze, showing zero knots despite the boat moving forward. The position of the “boat” on the screen fails to move until the app has unfrozen, so one might by then be on the rocks!
Has anyone else experienced this?
My iPad mini has been running on iOS 15.4.
My old iPad mini dating from about 2014 continues to work well and has only been known to freeze in this way once in 8 years of regular use.

Presume it’s the cellular version? If not it doesn’t have a GPS chip.

Naturally. It works well most of the time but a navigation instrument which cannot be relied upon is not adequate.
