Navionics on i pad

My whole Raymarine system went down on day one of a 6 week cruise. I used Navionics Okus on my iPad for the whole cruise totalling 1000 NM. No issues at all. No problems being logged out or anything. You have to have cellular functionality as others have mentioned but do kot need a plan. You only need connectivity via Wi-fi to download maos when needed. Frankly if I could find a way to link radar to this there is no need for anything else. Top of the range iPad is 1599 quid, Navionics subscription 35 quid a year. Raymarine system ? 20k? The future for sure is app based.

Have just come back from Lowestoft to Sheerness Ipad was used 99% of the journey.
Entire journey down below, gullible volunteer got soaked upstairs after 10 mins on the fly.
Simple/quick to zoom, easy to examine charts for those with less than 20/20 eyesight ie. shove it under yer nose especially under bumpy conditions.

My old Garmin 276C handheld plotter has finally bit the dust
I used/used it when going on to peeps boats for basic nav
Sometimes newbies have no leccy nav gear or too much or they dont understand it etc etc etc
Sometimes I might get on a vessel to deliver somewhere and I dont understand the modern electrickery stuff installed
Sometimes I think I better get into the 20th Century(the 21st can wait a bit) cos last week I was teahing a 19 year old and when He saw me getting paper charts out, He said it remided Him of a Film He once saw called 'Treasure Island'!
Could have been the patch over my left eye that dun it!
Anyway
I think 'Navionics' or similar on my i pad would be the answer, the Garmin will probably cost 70/80 quid to fix
My i pad is a 5th generation' air2' I think
32GB
What's the way forward Peeps?
Ta in aticipation
K
I use our old 276 as a backup and like you on other peoples boats. Mine died last year, but it was the battery, managed to buy a replacement on eBay and its back in action. iPhone with BlueChart mobile is an option but you have to buy the chart area. Don't like the Navionics app, have both on Phone and iPad. Prefer BlueChart mobile. I know they are the same company now but just prefer the Garmin App.

I've bought two Ipads of fleabay recently , £30 quid each both with Simcards, but use both through my phone as a wifi hot spot.
Both work really well on OLD version of Navionics but wont allow upgrade to new version.

Use one with navionics and the other with Windy . Bargain for the price , still have the Simrad as well though ..

Thanks Froggie, everyone
Looks like its 'doable' then
Going to check / look at two peoples boats this weekend who are using i pads with Navionics as back ups
Report will follow!
:)(y)

Also, checkout the Scanstrut Rokk Mini rang of mounts. They do a tablet mounting kit with a suction cup or screw on mount. Very well made.

Just been looking on the AppStore for the navionics app. £92.99 for Europe.
Is that the set up you guys are talking about?
I have an iPad but haven’t used it for navigation. I just use a paper chart folded into a
waterproof clear plastic folder
Is there any way to get a free trial of this app. Nearly £100 is an expensive mistake if it
doesn’t meet my needs.

I am thinking of the “sky demon “ app used widely in general aviation, where it can be
used for a trial period for free. There is also a “lite” version free but without many of the
full fat versions features.

Be interesting to see what you think of it this weekend, Kawasaki.

Hi East Cardinal
About to leave and go and check out what the Guys are using locally
Plus bend their ears comprehensively
Thanks for the 'Scanstrut' pointer Dino
Will report back asap

Navionics Boating App.

Two week free trial.

UK, Ireland, Holland £34.99

Navionics | Mobile App for Boating and Fishing

Kawasaki, any thoughts on navionics? I downloaded the free trial but don't think much of it.
Automatic plotting results in some strange tracks between waypoints.
Manual loading of way points is ok but seem to run out of waypoints quickly if there
a lot of course alterations planned.
Tidal data is well hidden!
It is probably me not using correctly and maybe will improve with time.
Loaned an old Lowrance Chartplotter from a friend and found that so much easier to use.
Maybe I will just stick with paper!

Quite important you fill in boat specifics ie draft etc. As mentioned I used for 5 weeks and always used the Automatic function and found it very good. It is quite conservative re its route plotting I found ie you could always shave corners but probably better this way. What I really liked is that once you fill in boat details it shows very clearly how far in you can get and more important makes it very clear where you can not go.

Yes, filled in the boat details. I probably need to practice using it more, but when the autoroute takes me down the port
side of a channel outside the buoyage I have to ask.......?
Not convinced yet that navionics is the way to go yet.
Another 10 days or so for the trial. I am hoping it’s me not using the app properly, and with practice I will be confident in it.

Blimey it over a Month since I reported back on this Thread!
Doesn't Time fly wen yer having fun!
My i pad aint got GPS
A remote receiver is the answer they say
Trouble is they are a few quid
This is only a back up as I mentioned
Howver I downloaded the freeby trial period app on my phone
It worked
Even if I fork out for a thinghy that will get sattelites etc
The 'App' says
This is for the Navionics UK and Holland (I think it was) 'This will be discontinued' ?????? WTF?
Oh yes, we did have a bit of a gathering in the marina a few boats on the same leg were using the App as back up and All said it worked fine
Some had 'other tablets' which had GPS facility
I thought. 'OK, I will get a cheap Tablet with GPS. Seemed a cheaper way than getting an 'add on' to my i pad
But if this 'To be discontinued' , where to next?
I se tablets for about 60 nicker
Plus it seems these apps are about 40 nicker
Still better than mending my old Garmin 276C
Then I would have a spare tablet which I could dedicate to Nautical stuff, I am thinking
Am I thinking correctly?
This getting into the 20th Century is quite a task!
:)
