Navionics iPad App

The main benefit of the Navionics HD app over and above previous Navionics apps is that all chart updates are free. I bought the HD version last spring and have had two free updates and both came with the message that all future ones will be free. No doubt until they have replaced the app with version 3 but I'm happy with what I've had so far. The drawback is that in order to get the updates you re-draw the maps you want which is a bit clunky. The iPad in a windscreen holder in the wheelhouse is a brilliant plotter. Still have the main plotter and never quite trust the iPad - apps do crash but it's clear, bright, big screen and at £295 plus £40 for the Navionics it's flippin great. Then you get to use it as a Kindle, browser, show films etc etc.

Has anyone had some quite serious GPS problems with an Ipad2 3G and Navionics? I'm told the device has a weaker GPS chip set than would be found almost anywhere else so, when either no 3G or WIFI, it struggles quite badly. What I find happening is that it loses a fix every 30-45 seconds, recovers and then loses it again; sometimes, the only way to get it back is to shut the app down. All this when approx 4 cables off land so no wifi. I don't have 3G.

From what I understand you need the 3G version as it has the full gps chip which is why you are struggling with positioning, however i Believe you can connect a gps dongle tha will solve this problem :)
 
No, I use the iPad 2 3g and the furthest I have been from land is 25 miles and it worked fine. Sorry I thought you had the wi-fi only model.
