Navionics iPad App

Just to add to other users' experience - a 3G iPad has a built in GPS and that will give you a position when you are out of 3G range and WiFi. I have used mine with success in the middle of the Atlantic (because I was bored, if you're curious).

Ah, thats what I was interested in, so the GPS is a stand alone system that gets its position from satellites rather than a 3g signal and Wi-fi.

as long as the ipad or smart phone has a proper gps chip, some cheaper ones use what is called agps which is done from cell towers and useless off shore, though ones with gps usually have agps as well to speed up location fiding.

If you brought a wifi model and wish you had GPS you can buy a bad elf GPS dongle which plugs into the iPad you then get GPS where ever. Comes at a cost though $99 :O

Not quite.
AGPS will use wifi/cell towers to speed up acquiring the position. But this is still GPS, so will work out your position using the satellites also.

Non-GPS devices can locate your position using mapped wifi hotspots, generally. But this is very hit and miss and should never be relied upon.

Do I need to buy a chart set in addition to the apps?

I'm interested in Navionics for both my iPad and iPhone 4S. Does this mean I need to buy BOTH the iphone and ipad apps PLUS a UK chart set which will run on both devices?

Thanks for your help

If you are buying from the same apple account, then no. Once you have downloaded and paid for it it becomes a free download to any of your other registered computers or devices.

I don't think the app runs independently of the charts. So you can buy the whole of Europe - charts and app. If you then wanted, say, the USA, you'd then buy another set of charts together with the app. The app and the charts you can't separate.

Looks rubbish on iPad 3. Anyone know why?
Is that the iPad app or the iPhone one?

I downloaded the brushes app for my Iphone out of interest following visiting the Hockney exhibition. I've just got an iPad & tried the iPhone app (x2 resolution) - it didn't seem very good. I then downloaded the app for the iPad and there's a huge difference - much more feature rich. Worth every penny.

Maybe it's the same with other apps - hence the difference in price.

Navionics ipad app

I have just been reading the March PBO in which there is an article "5 ipad navigation apps tested". What interested me were the available waterproof cases one of which allows access of all features and buttons and can be fitted with a rail mount, and thus can be installed at the helm. Seems to be a good back up plotter (for me).

Cheers,

Michael.

Correct. iPad specific apps run at higher resolution to account for the larger screen.

I believe the iPad versions of the Navionics apps have "HD" at the end and cost 2-3x the price.

Problem sorted.

The iPad hd version is what I have. When you upgrade to a new iPad the charts have to redownload.

Normal excellent service resumed.

As the OP, I thought I'd give an update. I got the i-Pad HD version and it is way better than trying to run the i-Phone app on the i-Pad, well worth the extra money. I also got an in-car holder (£14.95 on Amazon) which I have screwed to the bulkhead at the nav station and I now have a perfectly good back up chart plotter. In fact it has a bigger screen than my Garmin 555 at the helm! All for £60 - excluding the cost of the i-Pad of course!

I wonder how much the Garmin 555 costs, if you exclude the cost of the Garmin 555? ;)

Joking aside, if you have an iPad for other things, and can get it waterproofed and mounted at the helm/in the cockpit with a power source, it would represent an excellent solution for many of us.

Might look at the waterproofing and mounting, so I can use it with Google Maps on "The Cut"!!

What is the make/model?

ipad case

Here it is, scanstrut!
I sent them an email on Saturday to find out where I can buy the case (their website does not include it yet), and I had a reply this morning. Availability is 'imminent', and you will be able to buy direct from them (they are in Totnes). I also asked if the case is suitable for the new ipad as the article in PBO was written before the new ipad launch)

Cheers,

Michael.

ps I will post again if I receive any more interesting information.

We have an e7 at the chart table that doubles up as an interior helm. We've been contemplating buying an iPad to use for planning trips etc. from the pub and then sync any routes to the plotter when we're back on the boat.
I've had a further thought of getting one of the above cases with an appropriate mount so the iPad can be mounted on the exterior helm pedestal to use as a repeater for the e7.

Looking forward to Scanstrut actually releasing this product so I can have a good look at it.

I have it the other way round, e7 at the wheel, iPad down below. I figured the e7 more weather proof than the iPad.

Only skiing apps in the App store at the moment - more new stuff on the way?
Ditto, I wondered if the IPAD 3 version didn't work?

Has anyone had some quite serious GPS problems with an Ipad2 3G and Navionics? I'm told the device has a weaker GPS chip set than would be found almost anywhere else so, when either no 3G or WIFI, it struggles quite badly. What I find happening is that it loses a fix every 30-45 seconds, recovers and then loses it again; sometimes, the only way to get it back is to shut the app down. All this when approx 4 cables off land so no wifi. I don't have 3G.
