I had Navionics 5.3.1 on my phone but it seems to have reverted to base maps and I will have to buy a new app. Has it improved/added anything since then or are all the improvements on the HD version for tablets? Do you think there is any option which is better overall for smartphones, e.g Memory Map?

I bought the new app ("Navionics Boating") after my old app stopped working. Unlimited upgrades? Oh we know we said that but that was for the old app which, yes, was pretty much identical, but we've called it something slightly different so you'll have to buy it again. But it's got unlimited updates!

When I first downloaded it it was pretty dire but an update seems to have smoothed out many issues. Biggest plus: pinch to zoom now works on android. Biggest gripes: You used to be able to click on an object (buoy, tide/current symbol) and it would give you info. Now it brings up a cursor which invariably isn't where you clicked and you've got to sort of drag the map underneath the cursor to see info on the object. Mad. Oh plus it seems to advertise in-app upgrades for extra money like more menu features. And it wants more permissions than it should, like complete control over your phone which is apparently so it can call marinas from within the app...

Shame there aren't many alternatives on android.

You can now add different areas to the app instead of buying different apps for different areas. Apart from that, there is no change. Still lagging behind iOS for features.

I use MX mariner instead. It doesn't do marina info but the interface is nice and you can import and export routes to PC.

So far as I can determine, Memory map doesn't have tidal heights and current graphs which you can access by tapping the diamonds, so I think Navionics it will be.

I've heard good things about MX Mariner... but just to be fair - you can export routes/tracks from Navionics -albeit via email - but I agree that I've not found a way yet of importing stuff....

Does Navionics still require users to permit the system full access to emails and SMS messaging? I know lots of apps demand that...but so far I've refused, because I can't see why.

Don't recall the full set but they were excessive. I queried the full control of phone one and after a couple of weeks did get a reply from Navionics saying that it was in order to make in-app phone calls to marinas. Not sure if I believe that. Phone access is usually what marketers want to id your phone. Oh and let's not mention GCHQ and Angry Birds...
