Can anyone explain the Navionics card to me please, if I want the south coast card should I buy the EU084R card and I want the shading image overlay so I think I need the premium plus version which I think is about £200.
Do I also need the subscription or is this just for the app, also where does the card go in a Raymarie Axion plotter can't seem to find a sd card slot

Thanks

Navionics chart cards for plotters and the Boating App subs are completely separate. The SD card is on the front or back depending on which model Axiom.

If you already have an old expired card, the new card is half price. It's worth getting a new physical card as time goes on the card size has increased. No difference in price.

Lots of suppliers but I found the personal service and advice from Iain at Navimaps in Plymouth excellent.

How do you get to the back of the unit if it's fitted flush in the dash
I don't do this, but can't you nowadays update the card using internet without removing from the device?

Pkease don't attempt this mid voyage however. I had to help out a boat which tried to do an over the air update in a remote harbour surrounded by rocks and poor mobile signal. Update failed and left them with no chart plotter to sail onwards. Fortunately Navionics phone support were able to resolve (using different phone network).

I have the subscription for my iPad. £45 ish iirc. I transfer way points onto the chartplotter so don’t need the card. What am I doing wrong?
As long as you don't sail near Lentune Island or the Cowes breakwater (depending on how long ago you last updated your chart plotter).

A quote from John McEnroe comes to mind.
“You cannot be serious”

Why on earth is the card slot on the back?

God knows. Stupid. Known only to someone at Raymarine.
As a user it's not something that bothers me, or causes undue inconvenience. I assume they would have had to make the frame profile larger to accommodate front facing slots. Space on my console is at a premium already with an A9, A7, AP control head, chain counter, Yanmar engine display head and Fusion sound control head (could do without).

Perhaps because they had a fair amount of issues with failed SD cards on the front, where the waterproofing on the cover let moisture in. We have had to replace two card readers.
And nowadays most of the card updates can be done over WiFi so less need to access the card.

But can you do card updates by some other means? … e.g. WiFi, in which case, that’s okay.
