Navionics App - Where is it or am I missing something?

Finally, the Navionics app is very dependant upon the internet - something I really dont want.

There is a facility to download portions of the area you have covered to the device but it's a bit of a pain. You have to select the area you want and then it will download it. It won't let you download the whole chart at one go - just a comparatively small area, especially for a large boat that cruises at 20 knots. Agree with everything you say about the app but I don't think the iPad is much different. Great for the quick check on tides, depths, etc. but not a serious nav tool.

The iPad app doesn't require Internet access while underway. Only when downloading a chart area. The old iPhone UK/Holland had the entire chart, but the iPad HD version downloads a user specified rectangle. This is the bit that needs www when in port, but I found the area large enough for a weeks cruising range.

That facility's the same on the Android app - just tried it again and it's letting me download most of the area so probably finger trouble on my part.

Navionics Apps seem to update on a regular basis.
I think its mostly the "Community Layer"
On a friends phone, we had a situation in a poor coverage area where the app hadnt quite finished downloading whatever and then the phone went out of coverage - and that was that - nothing worked until it was back in coverage.
As I say - it would be much better if it wasn't so dependant on the internet.

Thanks Roy - Very helpful !

I want to link it to the e series via a wireless router. You tried that?

We have a pair of E Series widescreens in the race boat, one for the throttleman and one for the navigator, they are networked so we don't have a spare hole for the router - we are getting a network switch so that we can fit a router for the wireless which will make all of this possible.

Navionics have a FAQ for this: And Raymarine have a page as well Here

It might be possible to use the ports on the router thus not needing a Raymarine switch.

Also have a look at the DDWRT project and the cheap Linksys routers. IIRC there is even a DDWRT ROM image specifically for Raymarine.

I just used a standard 12v hub that costs 10s of pounds (may be less I don't remember)not the Raymarine version that costs hundreds of pounds! Have got two displays and the radar connected - all works well. Have also put a spare port socket at the lower helm so will experiment with a wireless router from there and then swap out the hub for a wireless version - sounds easy.....

Mike - I know you're not one for following convention or taking the easy way out, which is probably why you drive a new P67 and I drive an old F43...

But get rid of the Betamax and invest in an iPad-3 with the HD Navionics App (Europe HD Version: 2.5.1 - GeoCore version: 01.00.26.3) - you know it makes sense...

I'm out of here.....

Seems that the old Betamax isnt dead yet!!
Navionics have recently released some changes.
The Android version seems to have split into two - just like the iPad/iPhone versions.
The Android phone version has recently moved to version 2.3.
I downloaded it for my phone and nothing seems to have changed - probably bug fixes but I suspect it was mainly to split the version from their new HD one for tablets.
The phone version is still unusable IMO - there is absolutely no point in having the ability to drop a waypoint/mark and enter a route if what you enter cant be edited. Yes - I know it can be edited but it would drive you insane before you actually achieved a sensible accuracy.

The Android HD version for the tablet is at version no 1.0 so I guess someone has got to pluck up the courage, pay (£42) and download it to find out if it's any better than the phone version.
Anyone downloaded the Android HD version yet?

Maybe I'll have a go sometime but I'm actually very content with MM Tracker at about 4 quid.

Where is Navionics App on iTunes

All, I wrote to Navionics yesterday and asked where the App had gone. Here's the reply:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting Navionics Mobile.

Navionics has removed its applications from iTunes for maintenance and improvements.

They will be available again very soon on iTunes.

Please, keep checking back.

Best Regards
