NAVIGATRIX software: too good to be true?

Is it an alternative to Open CPN?

I had a look. Its not an alternative to opencpn. Its a linux distro which will blat everything on your computer and load a load of software including opencpn.

So if you have a spare laptop that you want to turn into a nav computer looks lime it is worth a go.

However if you already have a windows laptop you will just want to load opencpn.

Exactly. It's just a compilation of sailing programs. I'd rather have a normal operating system installed so that I can use the boats computer for something other than navigation if I chose.

Also Visit my Harbor charts only work on Windows, which is incredibly frustrating. I've yet to find a way around this.

That's what I had in mind - a dedicated low-spec boat laptop.
It's supposed to have integrated SailMail as well.

Downloaded NAVIGATRIX just now. Looking for something cheap and cheerful on eBay and will let my IT-nerd of a son loose on the thing.

But Visit my Harbour only covers the UK. We're planning to leave the UK behind.

It's a linux distribution based on Ubuntu that comes with all the sailing apps pre-installed.

There's another version on the same website designed for the Raspberry Pi: http://sailoog.com/en/openplotter

The main issue is getting charts. The only method I know to get new ones is to use expensive S-63 ones.

IIRC you can run navigatrix straight off a usb pen drive to check it out without installing anything. Openplotter is streets ahead, imho.
