Navigation Lights

Currently, the navigation lights on my boat are fixed each side to the rear of the wheelhouse windows. This however creates much glare, and vision is hampered when sailing at night.

In anticipation of improving night visibility, I am considering re-positioning the nav lights further forward and above the wheel house windows as indicated on the image.

I have seen several craft with their nav lights in a similar position, and views/comments from the forum on the viability of my proposal would be much appreciated.

Sorry, my image is rather small! The 'bubble' pointing to the rear of the wheel house reads "Current position" (of the nav lights) and the one pointing to above the window reads "Proposed position" (of the nav lights). Hope this makes sense!

What I have seen done, is to attach a piece of ply wood [or similar] on the side of the light that is causing a problem so that it causes a shadow on the area required but does not obstruct the lights from view to other vessels. You need to work out the size you need,use a piece of cardboard to work out the size and shape required, then when you have the template get it made up in wood, it’s a lot easy than moving light!! And you could only put it up when out at night and no one can see it, [usefull if your wood work skills are weak] /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

The ultimate solution to stopping "glare" would be to fit a combined light unit on the pulpit rail as many raggies have. You could keep the existing light as a backup incase of bulb failure in the bow light. Admittedly more cabling would be involved but there would be no glare even from the foredeck.

Sometimes you get a little glare off the pulpit itself from lights mounted on the pulpit. Its right in your eye line at the helm of a mobo. One trick is to wrap some black tape around the stainles rail for a few inches either side of the light.
