Navicom RT-650 AIS

This DSC VHF has AIS rx built-in. Anybody any experience or views if it could be a good way of getting AIS onto a PC Would a separate engine be better?

We have just fitted one interfacing with a garmin chartplotter. Seems a great bit of kit and works fine now but we had some problems getting the interface sorted out. PM me if you want the details.
