My boat has masthead tricolour and a steaming light half way up the mast.

Is it legal to use the tricolour with the steaming light whilst motoring, or must I have deck level nav lights instead? The colregs do not make this at all clear.

and the tricolour is optional and can be shown with normal lights if you so wish.

If you want to see a graphic of it to show its possible - download nav224.exe from the USCG ..... the Collision Regs and LIghts program.

Welcome to the forum.

You need side lights (which may be combined in a bicolur) a masthead (or steaming) light and a stern light. The stern and steaming lights may be combined as an allround white which itself will normally be combined with the tricolour.

The RYA booklet may explain things a little.

As sailorman says this topic has been aired before so a search or two should give you all you need to know together with comments about the lack of visibility of lights at the mast head in certain circumstances

If you use tricolour with steaming light, observers will see either red over white or green over white - which are in fact the identification lights for fishing boats. So you would be masquerading as something other than an ordinary power vessel. Fishing boats have a higher priority as stand on vessels.

NO, you cannot use the Tricolour with a Steaming Light.

You can only use the Tricolour when sailing -
OR you can use side lights(may be Bicolour) with a Stern Light when sailing

For motoring you must use deck level side lights(may be Bicolour) with a Stern Light AND a Steaming light up the mast - usually about halfway.

Also allowable when motoring is the masthead All round White and deck level Side Lights(may be Bicolour) - although this combination can be confusing.

NEVER use Tricolour with deck level Side Lights (as is often seen.....)

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

If you've got to add some deck level lights, add some two-way switches so that you can't have both sets of lights on at the same time and the steaming light only comes on when the deck level lights are on. I've also made the steaming light switchable so that I can use the deck level lights for sailing as a back-up if the tricolour bulb fails.

Check with USCG

Coll REgs teaching program quoted by them : nav224.exe

Good example of tri and Bi in combination with deck levels ....

Good idea but ...

Aagain nav224.exe a program quoted by USCG clearly shows and states that tri / bi can be shown with deck levels.

BUT - the steaming light I used to have wired into the engine panel so that I could only use it when engine key was on - efferctively rstricting it to its correct use as a 'under power' light .... the other lights were all on single nav light switch.

The Steaming light is actually the only one that is partucularly singled out for mention in terms of showing in conjunction etc. for this particularly topic.

And finally - I don't say USCG etc. are the Gods in this but as I was checking soemthing else the other day - I happened to come across this very bit ....
