I had a message a while ago saying that they had sold out to someone or other. My insurance is due November. Any ideas how the new bunch are dealing with renewals. Upping prices or demanding surveys or other antics?

Just renewed with them. All good but check paperwork carefully, they added a load of new questions/assumptions then put default "no" in the box, eg "single handed = no".

Mine went up 10% otherwise no issues

I am considering giving up on sailing for reasons such as this and others, and doing something else with my time… just relaxing perhaps.

Just renewed with them. Incease of 3.7 % so not bad. Boat is wood & 56 years old, survey last year. As others have said go through it carefully. I got them to confirm the single handed as that's most of my use. It's included up to 24hrs as per policy wording.

One significant change for us Med based folks, they're now unable to provide cover for Italian waters. Not an issue for me. They will provide cover should one be forced by breakdown, bad weather etc into Italian waters.

How odd. Seems a bit of an over reaction to anything in the thread.
To do with insurance cover changes, and OTHER things (as stated in my post) not simply this THREAD about insurance change.

Also lifestyle and or age changes.

I am not concerned that you consider it odd.

Forums are virtual places where people express their opinions etc.

I DO value helpful practical advice from this forum and other forums upon various subjects.

I am sorry you consider it odd.

No need to reply.

To answer original query N&G has for many years (since just after time Zurich insurance acquired Eagle Star etc from BAT) a trading brand of Z insurance with its own team in Brighton . So the recent decision of Z was to sell the brand. Cover in recent years was underwritten by Zurich Irish branch. Anyway post sale of brand I haven’t followed where cover is provided but clearly the new owners of brand might increase the commission - historically at least you could buy n&g cover direct or via a third party broker- all I can suggest is try getting quotes from craftinsure (nowRipe) plus a few others like haven Knox Johnston etc to see how new quote compares. This time round now being retired I looked around and got about 6 quotes and remained with current insurer-the thing is what’s good for one might not help another as underwriter appetite for certain craft varies between brokers etc.

Navigators & General, a previous trading name of Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, has been acquired along with its book of business by Geo Underwriting Services Limited.

We have a new website www.navandgen.co.uk and a new postal address: Navigators & General, C/O Nimbus House, Liphook Way, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 0FZ.

Your policy is now underwritten by HCC International Insurance Company Plc (‘HCCII’) trading as Tokio Marine HCC instead of Navigators & General, a trading name of Zurich Insurance Company Ltd.

Among the new defaults I had to alter were:

Outboard engine/battery - serial numbers needed to apply cover

Is the craft used singlehanded? - needed "YES" instead of default "NO"

Fitted with bottled gas? - needed "YES" instead of default "NO"

Are the gas bottles kept and fixed securely in a self contained locker that drains overboard and does the pipework conform to the current British Standard? - needed "YES" instead of default "NO"

Is your craft, tender or dinghy powered by an outboard motor? - needed "YES" instead of default "NO"

Is that motor secured with an outboard motor lock which is a device specifically designed, marketed and sold as a secure method to prevent theft? - - needed "YES" instead of default "NO"

Please provide details of what you do to secure that motor? - details needed

A survey that has been carried out by a qualified surveyor within the last 5 years and have all requirements/recommendations been completed? - needed "YES" instead of default "NO"

When was the last survey carried out? - date needed

They also require notification of the following -

Change of the address where your craft is moored/stored (the risk address).

Change of the security arrangements at the mooring / storage address, or any other circumstances which could increase the possibility of loss, damage or injury.

Deterioration in the state of repair of the craft (Seaworthiness).

Change of use of the craft of any kind.

Change of your occupation.

Where you or any other proposer or person living with you has received a conviction for arson or any offence involving dishonesty.

Where you or any person living with you has had any type of insurance declined, renewal refused or had special terms imposed by any insurer.

A security device being added to or removed from your craft.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.

I guess someone on this forum might know HCC or have claimed off them in past but it’s not an underwriter I have dealt with. Clearly as a retail product it’s still going to be subject to FoS jurisdiction for uk customers and compensation scheme protection. If I was to insure with HCc though I would suggest some more due diligence on their claims approach ,responsiveness to claims ,is the claims team uk based etc, what customer satisfaction scores do they have (net promoter score) . Try running their name through FCA website maybe.

I've just had to claim on my N&G insurance that I renewed in January this year. They have been very prompt with payments for the expenses I had. A bit pernickety over requiring receipts for certain items, but otherwise I've been happy with them.
