Nautor Swan 48 vs Arcona 46

I have been looking for a 46 to 48 foot cruiser/racer with comfortable 3 cabin accommodation for 6 - 8 people, main sheet track in cockpit, furling headsail with a solid reputation around £200,000 and max 2.5m draft and my current short list is down to 10 to 15 year old Arcona 46 and 15 to 20 year old Nautor Swan 48

I know they are a little bit chalk and cheese but if anyone has any guidance I would be grateful

What an awful choice to have to make.

In the forum tradition of offering advice on things one knows very little about, I would choose the pretty one, and Swan 48s seem to be quite sucessful on the racing circuit up here so good looks is not their only asset.

haha thanks - I know its a real problem - Arcona have a great reputation for build quality and they seem to hold their money but I just cant see the value (I looked at a 410 a couple of weeks ago) compared to what I see and read about the Swan

I would appreciate any 1st hand experience of either - good or not so good !

I've never owned an example of either I'm afraid. Could you not talk them into taking you for a sail.

They are both great yachts and I don't think you'd be disappointed with either. I have sailed a Swan 48 before and was really impressed. We have also delivered an Arcona 46 across Biscay and I only heard good things from the skipper and crew.

Due to the age range you are looking at, I would suggest that you remain open minded as to which type you buy and therefore focus on finding the right one of either model. I think the Swan has different rig configurations and both have different cabin layouts. If you find one that has the right layout for you, has been looked after really well, is well equipped and with a good survey report then go for that one. Both yachts will put a smile on your face when you hoist the sails and turn off the engine!
