I am having a party to celebrate ditching the desk job and going off sailing across big pond and travelling for a while. I have been debating for ages as to whether or not I should have a nautical theme fancy dress but wasnt sure there are enough "outfits" for variety. So I though I would put it to the forum to see what people would wear if they had a nautical fancy dress party!!....

Re: not sure i should confess this

well you are going to have lots of pirates and possibly few jolly jack tars.
frighteningly i tend to use any fancydress party as the opportunity to don a dress.
in this case i could at least claim to be in with the nautical theme by going as a common dockside prostitute as invariably I end up looking like one

Good God - how can one top that?

I would possibly don a dress to come as a figurehead. Or just wear a suit, go under the shower, and attend as a Titanic survivor.

once saw a chap at a fancy dress party in flippers, snorkel and a facemask, with a sign around his neck saying "Muff the Diver"....

sounds like a great idea, any idea of a mail order house that could supply a circa 1800 naval officers uniform, complete with hat?

Had a similar drunken conversation with a mate, but the theme would be international code flags....

A - I have a diver down, keep well clear at a slow speed!
B - I am taking in or discharging or carring dangerous goods
D - Keep clear of me, I'm manouvering with difficulty
F - I'm disabled, communicate with me
G - I require a Pilot
J - I'm on fire and have dangerous cargo on board, keep well clear of me
K - I wish to communitake with you
L - You should stop your vessel instantly
M - My vessel is stopping and making no way through the water
Q - My vessel is heathy and I request free pratique
U - You are running into danger
V - I require assistance
W - I require Medical assistance
X - Stop carring out your intentions and watch for my signals
Z - I require a tug

But we decided the best was to go with two white shirts both with a small T flag embroidered on our pockets - Keep clear of me; I'm engaged in pair trawling!

And you haven't issued a general invitation to the Forum! Shame on you.
