Bacalhão is best eaten as Bacalhão a Braz or Conde Barao, there are hundreds are recipies to try and make it interesting but these are the best. Also a national dish in Norway (stockfish?) which is were the Portuguese get theirs from, as there are no local boats in the trade.Read Alan Villiars The Voyage of the Argus. All about banks fishing.
As an aside, I found it is very easy to get good food in Portugal at almost any small café or restaurant. But much more difficult in Spain.
