Nasty bearing noises

After running the Volvo 2003 in my Moody 31 for about between 1 and 2 hours I get a noise from below the cockpit which is very difficult to explain in text form, but sounds like it might be caused by the prop shaft vibrating inside the cutlass bearing. Is this likely? Should I worry about it? How soon might the bearing give up completely?

The noise doesn’t disappear quickly when the revs are reduced but eventually the noise does go away and after giving the engine a good 30 min rest the noise doesn’t start again for a while. This seems to suggest that it is temperature related, but that can’t be true for the cutlass bearing can it?

I also have a Deep Sea Seal that does get fairly hot, is that normal? Could that cause this kind of noise?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

My 2002 has developed a similar noise following a trip to Spain. We did hit some flotsam, and found some monofilament between the P-bracket and the adode.

The engine had new mounts this year and also has a deep sea seal. I plan to replace the seal this winter. I will probably take the shaft to an engineering shop to fid out if it is still straight. No sign of dents on the prop.

If your seal is getting hot it is probably over compressed.I did that once to try to stop one from leaking and wrecked it.
