NASA Nav Light Repair

Old thread but just got back after 3 months away and found my anchor light barely visible. Up the mast took it of and what did I find All the white leds have gone dim !!! Waiting to see if Nasa reply ! Changed one to make sure this is the fault. This light has only been on the mast 4 months... Not too happy

I had a similar experience as poster early

I don't think its the LEDs I think it's the way the LEDs are been driven as relaements also failed
 
I replaced a 'Lopolight' tri/ all round white with a NASA tri/all round white, the Lopo' started to be erratic, even on the bench with a 12v supply sometimes it would work and sometimes not, the NASA has been at the top of the mast for about 5 years now and is still working perfectly.

But surely, if sales volumes increase then profit also increases, which should enable more to be spent on quality control.

What matters, in the end, is what customers are prepared to accept.

If a company's products get a reputation for unreliability, then it can bring that company down.

Japanese manufacturers learnt this lesson decades ago.

I have NASA depth-sounder, speed/log, Navtex, and tricolour. All, repeat all, have developed faults; ranging from total failure to annoying defects.

My tricolour light is inoperative; the back light on one display won't turn off; my Navtex display has several lines of garbled text; the magnets in speed/log impellers corrode and expand, causing it to jam.

When I send things back to NASA, they repair them cheaply and promptly, but that isn't good enough.

I bought cheap, and like many who buy cheap, I will end up buying twice.

Good for you, that is what I shall do when my present one goes US. Despite all the claims that dedicated LED lights would last till the next ice age, they fail. My pal has had three of the common, market alternative to Nasa.
When they fail it is more complicated expensive, inconvenient and possibly dangerous than just changing a bulb.

I am one who does not wish to have an LED board based item out of reach of hands ! I am of the school where LED bulb used to replace normal bulb ...

Generally cheaper in long run ... easier to fix when it does 'blow' .....

The issue with LED as well as incandescent lights is how high are the lights driven or over driven.

The higher current that is used the higher the light output but the shorter the life of the element or LED

I have had LED spot lights fail and can only be replaced.

Its all about profit as was the case when the incandescent light were redesigned to shortened the life by the bulb manufactures

There is a myth that a famous Light Bulb manufacturer has a bulb in a safe. It was developed many years ago and was made to never burn out ... its tech hidden away to prevent its being on market.
 
Well they got back to me offering to repair the board ! Only problem is the shipping is around 30GBP and then would have to pay duty when it came back . So I told them I would change the LED's myself at a cost here of about 30p (bag of 100 white leds 1.50gbp) Good products let down by lazy R&D still wish them well.

That's the exact response I had so I repaired it myself but when it failed aging and again I gave up as I had a similar shipping costs plus paying for the repair
