NASA marine EX1 exhaust temperature alarm

I have an exhaust temperature alarm I installed over 10 years ago. Trouble is it simply sets off an alarm. There is no visual display, so it's impossible to know if it is working. I have just ordered one of the siliconmarine ones.

From personal experience not only exhaust elbow temperature, but also water flow. Had I known at the time my seawater inlet was plugged I would have saved my Stbd engine last Summer.

These also work just fine, plus you can connect a very loud siren to the NO - Com contacts.

My engines are now smothered with temperature, flow and pressure sensors, all coupled to a very very loud alarm if something goes awry.

IMHO it is a shame that the Insurance companies do not encourage fitting such devices e.g. 5% off for an exhaust alarm, and another 5% off for a flow alarm.

You can just see the sensor held against the injection bend by the top hoseclip so no holes made on the exhaust. The wire is protected by a heatproof sleeve.

Thank you,

I see you only need the temperature of the elbow, that is easy enough to fix.

Presumably you can set the alarm temperature to suit.

The thermostat opens at 100° C, but the engine runs hotter than that.

What would be an right temperature to set for the exhaust alarm?

The Silicon versions look good but it looks like you have to drill a hole through the exhaust hose! Is this the case or have I read it wrong?
Not sure how that captive o ring will seal up the hose afterwards?

Don't worry about the actual temperature. Just fit it, go out, warm up the engine then give it a blast at close to max revs for as long as it takes to get a stable temperature reading, then set the alarm temperature 10 degrees higher.
