NASA instruments

For what it's worth, I installed a NASA wireless wind instrument at the start of the year, and so far so good... it even survived Hurricane Ophelia!

My NASA wind speed/direction lasted about 8 seasons before the mast-head unit failed. I was pleased to discover that the mast-head unit can be bought separately but even more pleased that NASA repaired the old one very reasonably (I seem to remember for about £25). The service was excellent and the guy I spoke to most helpful

I had a NASA that lost its cups. Like others, got good service from NASA in replacing it. The current cups have survived 2 years intact, but last weekend I noticed the wind direction indicator was jammed. I wonder how that could happen ...

None on my mast at the time. That was a neighbour's.

Looking around the marina (Hythe, Southampton Water) I noticed that the starlings seemed to have a preference for perching on wind instruments, whether electronic or just pointers. At least they weren't perching on the cups themselves, but I wouldn't put it past them.

I guess it's a trip up the mast for me to see if I can re-seat the wind vane. Perhaps to fit a Windex or similar. In the meantime it's wool-on-the-shrouds time.

Telltales low down on shrouds will show different wind direction to one in clearer air about 60ft asl.
The windward ones attached to the shrouds are always in clear air. The leeward ones are (obviously) wildly wrong. I always hated craning my neck to see the windex. Tell-tales in the shrouds are much better imho, and no expense and nothing to go wrong.
