There was a good article in PBO a few years ago. Someone bought a new unit mhu, removed the spindly spindle and replaced it with a thicker one, then drilled out the cup unit to suit.
Another happy NASA Clipper wind user here! I have had mine for 13 years and it's still going strong!

The windward ones attached to the shrouds are always in clear air. The leeward ones are (obviously) wildly wrong. I always hated craning my neck to see the windex. Tell-tales in the shrouds are much better imho, and no expense and nothing to go wrong.Telltales low down on shrouds will show different wind direction to one in clearer air about 60ft asl.
